I stand there, my heart racing faster and faster. I've dreamt about this for the last few weeks, but now that Kayla's standing right in front of me, I really don't know how to react. I came out only because I didn't want to face the silence in my house. I look down at my shoes, unsure of what to say. I didn't know she came here when she ran away.

Ash-I'm...I'm sorry.

I look at her. Her hands fidget awkwardly, like she wants to say something but doesn't know what to say. Where are you going, I ask her.

Home, she says, then laughs at herself. Though I don't know where home is anymore. You-why are you here?

We moved, I reply. I stay here now. Kayla looks surprised, but hides it well. What are you doing here so late anyway?

It's Kayla's turn to stare at her shoes. I-I wanted to go back and look for you. Her voice trails away on the last few words. I didn't know whether you wanted me back, though. She raises her head and looks at me, her eyes bleak and empty.

I look at her, and am surprised that my heart can break that bit more. Come with me, then, I suggest quietly. Kayla looks at me. She tilts her head slightly to one side, her face still dark with distrust, but nods her head. She still doesn't smile.

As we walk down the path to my house, I don't let her see how happy I am to have found her again.

Did you find what I left for you?

I haven't gone to your old house.

So she didn't find it. Well, that doesn't matter now. She's here.

And she'll stay with me forever from now on.

Right?
