(A/N): Requested by Zetsubo-Tamashi! A two-parter detective & wolfboy/Kaiketsu Mystery AU! I got so into this one it’s two parts, hehe~ Also I don’t know what happened in the actual, Riku-and-Iori canon Kaiketsu Mystery, but my take on it is this: Detective has to find a thief. Wolfboy, who is said thief, provides for several (quite literally) armies of children who live on the streets, which leads to Wolfboy having to steal to make sure everyone gets food. What happens from there on out depends on who’s Detective and Wolfboy~!
“You say you’ve had a…” Gaku looked down at his notebook. “... a thief recently?”
“Yes.” The baker wrung out her hands. “I’m sorry to trouble you, Gaku-kun, but the morning bread keeps disappearing and I’m worried about the customers. My boys are growing up too, and…” She trailed off.
“I see,” Gaku said, “Do you mind if I show myself around?”
The baker smiled, relieved. “Not at all, Gaku-kun,” She said, inviting him in, “Please, make yourself at home.”
Gaku stepped inside. As the only detective of this small town (self-employed, as it was), he was quite comfortable in other people’s houses. Although, it was common that instead of a case, he’d find himself going out to have tea.
So he didn’t even flinch when an orange-haired child threw himself at Gaku, a much younger dark blue-haired child following close behind.
“What are you doing to Mama?!” The orange-haired one shouted, very adorably glaring at him and clinging to Gaku’s waist. His younger brother - at least, Gaku assumed it was his younger brother - was looking at him uncertainly, like he was unsure whether or not to follow.
“Nii-shan,” He said nervously, holding his arms out to the orange-haired one.
Immediately the orange-haired one let go of Gaku and raced to pick up his younger brother, smooshing their cheeks together. “Don’t worry, Iori,” He said, shooting Gaku a supposed-to-be-threatening-but-actually-very-cute glare, “I won’t let him hurt you or Mama!”
Their mother, the baker, laughed. “This is Gaku-kun, Iori and Mitsuki. Say hi!”
“I still think you’re evil!” The orange-haired one - who Gaku now identified as Mitsuki - declared.
“Gwaku-shan,” The little dark blue-haired one, Iori, said, said. “Thwief catwer,” He added.
Mitsuki squealed and hugged Iori tighter. “That’s right, Iori! You’re so smart! He’s going to catch the thief!” He turned and glared at Gaku, pointing at the door. “Well, go catch ‘em!”
Gaku grinned and ruffled the two children’s hair. “I’ll catch the thief,” He promised, laughing as he was shoved out by two eager children.
“Thank you, Gaku-kun!” Their mother said.
Gaku waved.

Turns out, Gaku’s thief wasn’t doing a good job of hiding their trail.
By the back door of the bakery there were footprints - barefoot, Gaku noted, and dirty enough to leave prints even on a well-populated sidewalk. He followed them down two streets and around a corner.
What puzzled him, though, was the fact that the tracks suddenly stopped.
Well, not stopped exactly. More like they were human tracks then dog tracks. A really big dog, or maybe a wolf. The tracks changed in an alleyway, so Gaku knew there likely wasn’t going to be anyone who had witnessed whatever had happened.
He’d crossed two back alleys when there was a loud banging noise. Stunned, Gaku watched as waves of half-starved, poorly-clothed, dirty children fled out of the alleys and ran away. It took him a moment to realize they were running away from him, and by the time he was moving they were nearly all gone. Except-
Except for someone close to Gaku’s age urging the last children on.
“Hey!” Gaku said, catching the person’s wrist. “Wait! I need to ask you a few questions!”
The stranger struggled but looked like they didn’t have the energy to resist. Gaku could feel their bones, and they were so dirty and wore such ill-fitting clothes that Gaku couldn’t tell what gender they were. The only way Gaku could tell they were close in age was that they were taller than him.
“Hey,” Gaku said, more softly this time, “I won’t hurt you. I just want to ask you a few questions.” He hesitantly added, “If you come with me, I can also give you a bath and food.” Gaku released their wrist and have them the choice to decide.
The stranger seemed to anxiously think it over before disappearing back into an alley. Gaku despaired over losing his lead until they came back out, this time with a faded and tattered blue ribbon. They tied it into a ring Gaku hadn’t noticed that was built into the side of the alley before they quietly slipped their hand into Gaku’s.
It was an intimate touch Gaku hadn’t expected in the least, and he jumped. The stranger looked at him like it was the most natural thing in the world to hold his hand. Gaku sighed and led them to his house.
Gaku unlocked the door and led the stranger to his bathroom. “Can you wash yourself?” The stranger shook his head and Gaku sighed.
He helped the stranger undress - which was how he quickly figured out that the stranger was decidedly male - and spent a good amount of time washing the dirt off the stranger. Then he washed and conditioned his hair, which turned out to be a pretty shade of brown and really soft. The stranger made a sound of bliss as Gaku ran his fingers through his hair.
Once Gaku had turned off the water and toweled the both of them dry, he attempted to find the loosest clothes he had for the stranger, which turned out to be a hoodie he didn’t know he had a pair of sweatpants. He seemed to like them, which was good, because Gaku didn’t have any other clothes he thought would fit him and because he’d already trashed the other clothes.
Afterwards Gaku heated up leftovers from his dinner from last night for the stranger. It was as if he blinked and then he was being puppy-eyed for seconds. Gaku laughed and found the ingredients to make omurice in his fridge. He made enough for himself and the stranger, then sat down to eat for himself.
When they were done Gaku piled the dishes in the dishwasher and set to wash and shooed the stranger into the bathroom. He found a plastic-packaged toothbrush he hadn’t opened and shows him how to brush his teeth. Once that was done, they faced another challenge.
Who would get the bed.
“You’re my guest,” Gaku argued, “You get the bed.”
The stranger stubbornly shook his head and pushed Gaku towards the bed.
Gaku scowled. “No, I can sleep on the couch.”
Another push towards the bed.
Gaku huffed. “Fine.” The stranger visibly brightened until Gaku added, “The bed’s big enough for both of us to share.”
He attempted to argue but Gaku wouldn’t take no for an answer. He pulled the stranger closer until there were chest to chest, albeit him having to look up a bit. “My house,” He growled, “My rules.”
The stranger nodded, sulking a bit as Gaku pulled them both into the bed and pulled the covers up over them. He immediately fell asleep though, betraying how tired he was.
Gaku hadn’t had the chance to notice how incredibly, insanely attractive the stranger was, but now he was getting a face full of it - literally. The stranger was close enough that Gaku had to fight the urge to brush his bangs out of his closed eyes. Eventually he gave up and just did it anyways.
The stranger made a noise and pulled Gaku’s hand to his cheek. It was cute, Gaku thought, then he realized that the stranger’s other arm was wrapping around his waist and their legs were quickly tangling together.
Gaku gave up and fell asleep.
