Sardinia opened her eyes to a ceiling of coloured glass. Her neck still hurt.
Hurt so, so much.
She couldn't move, really. She tried to turn her head, but could only turn it so far. She heard the rustling of fabric as she choked out the first word she had spoken since the assualt.
"Why?"

They'd set up a schedule of Sardinia-watching. The first time she woke up, it was Erin's turn and of course he noticed. He rushed over.
"Shh, shh, it's okay," He soothed, immediately making himself visible to the queen. She was staring blankly at him, and Erin brushed the hair out of her eyes.
Erin stood and rung a bell on the table by Sardinia's bed. Coda and Fang would hear it, and Fang would bring Orion. The bell, Erin was told, was to be used for notifying the others for changes in Sardinia's condition. This certainly counted.
A few minutes later Coda burst in, Fang and Orion a minute behind. Erin had propped Sardinia up in a sitting position against her pillows, and had wrapped her fingers around her deck of cards.
Coda had stopped at the door and slowly walked to Erin's side, staring at Sardinia with worry. Her eyes followed him as he sat down and sighed in relief.
Fang and Orion ran in as if they had run from another star. Orion collapsed on the doorframe, his eyes never leaving Sardinia. Fang was bent over as he huffed, "We just got a message from Vega and Capella. They have information."
"Yes, let's hear it," Coda said. None of their eyes left the queen.
Fang quickly put up a hologram to Mistero. Vega and Capella answered quickly.
"Everyone," Vega said, then stopped. "Sardinia-san. It's wonderful to see you awake. You're the one most affected by the information we've discovered."
Capella picked up where his leader left off. "Yours is a rare case, but there was some data. For a week you will be feeling pain on fluctuating levels from the mark, which will then disappear with time."
Vega continued. "Are you feeling all right, Sardinia-san? Can you talk?"
Sardinia just barely shook her head. She turned her head the slightest bit and glared at Erin.
"Me?" He said. "What do you want me to- oh."
Erin gently took Sardinia's card from her and flipped them over, so she could see them. He flicked through them, until Sardinia just barely pointed at them. The four she'd picked out he showed to Vega and Capella.
Five of Pentacles. Strength. Four of Wands. Death.
Vega nodded. "I see," He said, "In that case, you know yourself best, Sardinia-san. Please, get some rest."
The hologram blinked out and they stared at the place it had been until Sardinia made slight grabby hands at Erin. Erin gave her back her cards, and she glared at them all.
"Right," Fang said, "We'll leave you to get some sleep, Sardinia." He and Orion both came forward to ruffle the queen's hair, then disappeared out the door, shutting it behind them.
Erin and Coda both lingered as Sardinia seemed to sigh and close her eyes. They both watched as her breaths evened out, her hands clutching at her cards. Coda stood up and circled around the bed, settling on the other side of the queen.
Erin made himself curl up on the bed as Coda did the same, reaching across. Their hands intertwined right over Sardinia's.
Erin fell asleep trying to memorize every feature on Coda's and Sardinia's faces.

Nearly a week from the assualt Sardinia seemed to have fully recovered. A few days after Vega's and Capella's hologram, she was talking again, and, a couple more days later, walking. She didn't seem to have a problem ignoring everyone though, whether talking or not.
Cute and stubborn, Erin thought.
Along with Sardinia's recovery, everyone's moods seemed to be raising as well. There weren't as many tense, stiff moments anymore, more joking around and grins on everyone's faces.
There was one day, though, that Erin was on edge. He could feel it - something bad was going to happen. His blood was buzzing and his knife was constantly in hand. He felt like bouncing off the walls.
He shared this sentiment with Coda. The Beastian knew by now that Erin's sixth sense wasn't anything to underestimate, so Coda agreed to watch out for anything unusual.
That night, Erin was patrolling the corridors of Sirena's palace when someone dashed by. He almost stabbed them before he realized it was Coda, pulling him in the direction of Sardinia's bedroom. His ears were pricked and his eyes blown wide, tailing lashing and wrapping itself around Erin's wrist.
"Queen," Coda managed to say as they ran, "Nightmare."
They burst into Sardinia's bedroom, rushing to the queen's bedside. The blankets and sheets were strewn about, the queen herself flailing and sweating, mewling and letting out high-pitched noises of desperation. Erin could practically taste the sharp tang of fear in the air.
"Wake up, wake up!" Coda said fearfully. His hands flew about, not touching Sardinia. It wasn't good to touch someone who was having a nightmare, Erin knew, but what other option did they have?
"Sardinia, wake up!" Erin yelled, feeling just as useless, "Please!"
At that Sardinia's eyes flew open and she shot upright. She pitched forwards and let loose a half-sob half-scream.
Erin and Coda barely caught her before she fell into the sheets. Erin couldn't process anything, other than the fact that this was Sardinia, wretchedly sob-screaming and grabbing at his and Coda's clothes. He barely heard himself say comforting words or felt it as he wiped away Sardinia's endless.
It felt like centuries before Sardinia opened her eyes again. Her tears seemed to have no end, and her face was vulnerable in a way that Erin had never seen before. Her mouth opened and a jumble of words fell out, something that sounded like "Stay help why hurts no don't leave please". It hurt Erin's heart, all of it.
"We're here," Erin whispered, burying his face in Sardinia's sweat-soaked hair, "We won't leave."
Sardinia whimpered just as Erin saw Coda lick her tears away. "We won't leave," He repeated.

Sardinia couldn't stop the tears coursing down her cheeks. Coda was licking them away, and Erin was rubbing her back. Despite the broken sounds coming out of her mouth, she felt comfortable, safe, with these two.
With Coda and Erin.
The night wore on and Sardinia couldn't remember how or when she ended up laying back on her bed, Coda and Erin curled protectively around her. She closed her eyes and fell asleep, one last thought accompanying her into a deep sleep.
She hadn't felt this safe - loved - ever.
