I barge into my bedroom, where Rylan is sprawled across my blankets. Soft snores are coming from her open mouth, and I struggle to stifle my giggles. I close the door and tip toe over to her. Without making a sound, I jump up and belly flop on top of her.
She wakes immediately and yelps, both of us falling onto the floor. She gapes at me and I start laughing. After a minute, Rylan joins in with my laughter.
Only when we are both heaving for a breath, do we stop laughing. I grin at Rylan and she scoffs.
"Ha ha ha." Rylan enunciates sarcastically. I giggle, climbing up onto my bed.
After Rylan follows my lead and sits next to me, I grin at her. She looks at me suspiciously and I roll my eyes.
"Do you know who that wolf from earlier was?" I ask, mostly rhetorically. Rylan taps her finger against her chin, as if in deep thought. I roll my eyes at her, causing her to laugh.
"Well, when we were coming back Roger- Kayn's beta came out to meet us."
"So... What is the point of this?"
I scrunch my nose up at her and shove her shoulder lightly.
"The point is that the wolf from earlier had to have been Kayn!"
"And?"
I huff, annoyance seeping into my voice.
"And, I think that Kayn might kinda be my..." I trail off, getting quieter.
"Your what?" Rylan teases.
"My -"
A loud knock on the door interrupts me. Rylan scowls and opens her mouth to shout at the person. I tackle her, clamping my hand over her mouth.
"Who is it?" I shout in a sing-song voice. I hear a scoff from outside and the door opens.
"Who else?" Bruce, Rylan's dad, says as he steps into the room. He eyes Rylan's and my position with a raised eyebrow. I laugh and climb off of her stomach.
"What's up?" I ask.
"Alpha wanted me to come get you to talk about what happened earlier."
I roll my eyes, and Rylan sticks her tongue out at her father.
"We were in the middle of a chat, make him wait." She says, furrowing her eyebrows at him. I chuckle as Bruce scowls at her.
"She needs to come with me, now."
I roll my eyes and move toward the door, tossing my cardigan onto my bed.
"Fine. I'm coming."
Rylan jumps up and races after me as I follow her father. She matches my stride and playfully frowns at me.
"So, why were you in the forest earlier?" I ask, slyly tilting my head to the side. She glances up at Bruce, and whispers in my ear.
"I was making sure wolfy boy didn't try to kill you." She says it so seriously that I almost believe her. I raise an eyebrow, and she chuckles.
"Fine, I was watching to see what you guys would do. I mean seriously! One second he was trying to kill someone, the next he is practically laying at your feet!" She exclaims a bit loudly.
I wince at her sudden volume. She murmurs an apology, and I look sideways at her.
"When this is all over, we need to talk about all that."
She smirks at me, knowingly, and I roll my eyes at her. Bruce stops in front of the doors to my father's office, causing Rylan and I to practically walk into his back. He frowns at us as he turns around.
"You two are just going to have to behave yourselves in there. Right?" He says, in a hushed tone. Rylan and I look at each other. A sly look crosses our features.
"We make no such promise." Rylan says in all seriousness. Bruce glares at us, but opens the doors anyways. Leading us inside, I am surprised by what I see.
"What the hell is going on?" I snap, seeing Kayn chained to the floor using silver. Rylan gasps once she steps into the room.
Silver chains are only used on the biggest threats to our pack, as silver drains our strength. The last person to use those chains is Cole, for attacking me and almost killing several more pack members.
Kayn's eyes meet mine, and he thrashes against the chains. I step forward, my hands reaching for him subconsciously. Bruce steps into my way, grabbing my arm to stop me. Behind him, a loud growl echoes through the small space and everyone freezes. Bruce's eyes seem to bulge out of his head, and he whips his hand away from me.
I glare at him as I step around him, slamming my shoulder into his. My father steps in-between Kayn and I. My eyes snap up to his, a glare settled into my features.
"Move."
Everyone in the room tenses as I snarl at my father, the alpha. Rylan lays a hand on my shoulder and I tense up even more, if that is possible.
"Kira, you need to calm down." My father says hose words in the most monotone voice he can, as if he is disinterested in the situation before him.
"Screw that." I spit, glaring at him.
"Kira."
That's it. A one word warning from my father. A reminder of my place, in this room and this pack. That no matter what happens, until he gives me his place, my father will still have more power than me.
Rylan tugs at my arm, sensing the ferocity in me. I blink slowly and shift my gaze to her. She doesn't flinch at the fierceness of my gaze, and I soften my features into a cool facade.
"Come here." She whispers low enough that even my father cannot hear. But I catch everything that happens in this room. The clinking of the chains hooking Kayn to the floor. The shuffling of Bruce's feet as he looks uncomfortably between my father and I.
I let Rylan tug me to the side, causing my father to cross his arms cockily and smirk at me. I snarl at him, exposing my teeth, and the smile drops from his face.
"Kira, what is going on? Why are you acting like this?" Rylan asks quietly, not wanting to trigger my wolf into attacking. I slide my gaze to hers and a single tear slides down her cheek. Rylan is strong, but if something is bothering me, it bothers her. I sigh, suddenly feeling really guilty, and pull Rylan into a hug. She grips my shoulders like a lifeline and I whisper in her ear.
"He's my mate."
