Chapter Thirty-One

Everything is numb when I awaken, then slowly everything comes back. First, my senses. I feel the sheets of my bed under my body. I hear the slight whirring noise of the fan that is pushing a cool breeze through the room. I can smell Kayne, but only faintly because of the draft. I refuse to open my eyes to look around, because of the sun shining right on my face. The last thing I feel is the cold metal band around my left ankle. My memories come to me next. I remember meeting my father, and keeping Kayne from shifting, and talking to my father, and my wolf taking control... And losing Kayne.

A small whimper floats from my throat. I hear movement coming closer to me, but I can't pinpoint it. My wolf is howling and whining for her mate. It feels like she is scratching the inside of my head, trying to get out. My hands grip my temples as I grit my teeth. Her screams are deafening. I feel lost without him. I left my mate to a fate he shouldn't have to suffer. With my position in this pack, I should have a say in what happens. Tears stream down my cheeks before I can even think to stop them.

Suddenly, I feel a hand caress my cheek. It brushes my tears away, and I know who's hand it is. I push as hard as I can and I open my eyes a crack. Rylan is sitting on the bed next to me, stroking my cheek while she cries with me. I bolt upright, there is no reason for her to be crying. I whirl to her and tackle her in a hug. She stiffens, surprised, then she relaxes and sobs.

"I should have been there for you! You needed my help to get to your mate and I didn't try hard enough!" My heart aches for my friend who has been like a sister to me.

"Ry, there was nothing you could have done." I pull back to look into her eyes, "If you had stepped in to help, I wouldn't have been able to stop my wolf. She didn't care who got in her way, she just wanted to get to our mate."

Rylan nods and sniffles, rubbing her nose with the back of her hand like a little kid.

"And I know that, but I just felt so helpless when they started trying to restrain you. And then when I got outside and saw you like this, I couldn't deal with it. I -"

Before Rylan can finish her sentence, the door opens. My gaze jerks to the door and my wolf steps forward. I snarl at the intruder. My wolf is pissed and devastated at having lost one loved one, she cannot handle to have another torn from her grasp. And neither can I. I would kill to save those I love. Who wouldn't?

Rylan's father is standing in the doorway, refusing to meet my gaze. He gestures for Rylan to follow him, and I bare my teeth at him, daring him to take her. Rylan grips my hand in hers, making me switch my gaze to hers.

"Don't worry, I'll be back. I have to go help Kayn. He won't let anyone near him except me and his beta."

"Why?" I say, snapping my eyes back to the beta in the doorway as he shifts his weight uncomfortably.

"Because, I'm your best friend and I'm one of the only ones who you would trust to be there when you woke up. He wants me to keep him updated on how you are."

I nod, completely understanding. I, myself, want to know how he is doing too. Rylan gives me a knowing look and stands.

"I'll tell you how he is when I come back later, okay?"

"Thank you," I whisper. I rush to envelope Rylan in a hug, which send her father tripping backwards to keep some distance between us. When we pull away, I glare at her father. He stands straighter, pretending nothing happened, but I saw everything. He is afraid of me. Not only me, but my wolf too. My work growls at this, but stops when we realize Rylan is at the door, ready to leave.

"I love you Kira, I'll be back as soon as I can." With that, her father slams the door closed and click the lock into place.

"I love you..." I trail off as I realize I am alone in my room. I take a second to gaze around at my surroundings. The main window is propped open with a fan in the gap. All of he curtains are pulled open, allowing the sunshine to filter in. I step towards the open window, but the cuff on my ankle tightens. I realize it won't let me go far, to my bed, the bathroom, and maybe the closet if I pull hard enough. I follow the chain to see it clipped to the wall outside the bathroom door.

I scoff and pull at the chain. It doesn't move, but after a bit of work I could pull it out. I drop the metal, deciding that I should wait to see what situation the rest of the world is in before I break out of my own bedroom. I'm sure the ceremony was surely ruined, and most of the packs certainly went home. I sit on my bed and wrap a blanket around my shoulders, staving off the cold air that is still filtering around the room. I pause, I don't know what day it is or how long I was out for. The sun is just above setting, meaning it's around six o'clock. But I have no idea how long I've been asleep.

I glance down and realize I am wearing a pair of sleep shorts and a tank top. No wonder I'm cold. I bundle the blanket under my chin and watch the door, waiting for Rylan to return.
