It was chilly up on the roof of the building. A cool wind ruffled my hair a bit as I dropped my bag to the ground. I dug around in my bag and pulled out my pair of boot and slipped them on. They were heavy to wear but not so much that it was overly difficult to walk in them. I looked over Manhattan I could see extremely far from up here and it was beautiful, the almost never ending sea of lights, but now was no time for scenic views now was time to test out my new kicks. I turned them on with a small controller I held in my right hand and I could see a faint glow peeking out from underneath them. I took a deep breath. Ok they didn't explode that's good. I stood there for almost a minute before I took another deep breath. Well it's now or never.
I took off running across the building roof and once I reached the edge, I jumped and pressed the trigger button on the controller. Everything seemed to stop for a moment. I could no longer hear anything but the one beating of my heart. For a moment It felt as though I were weightless as I got launched a good 3 feet further up, but that feeling only lasted a second before I was hurly back down and hit the cold concrete of the next roof over. I cursed as I hit the ground and lay there in pain for a moment before it finally clicked to me. The boots worked. I didn't plummet to my un timely demise! I was able to launch myself up with them! I fist pumped into the air still laying on my back trying to take it all in. I laid there for a moment before it hit me. I need to do it again. So I did. I took off running once more and jumped again this time when I pressed the button I managed to launch myself even further up. As I came back down I prepared for the landing a little more still stumbling but not falling over. I was over joyed that they worked. Cheering and dancing with glee on the rooftop. I decided I needed to take it to the next logical step to test these out so I did.
I jumped at the last minute as the edge of the roof came into view and right as I was about to plummet into the ally way I pressed the button giving me just the boost I needed to make it to the next building. I hit the ground and rolled back onto my feet pausing for a moment to look back over to the other building, but only for a moment. I instantly took off running across the roof until I reached the next ledge jumping once more and landing on the next building over. I kept running and jumping feeling as free as the wind. More free than ever. Nothing was stopping me! nothing could stop me! it was the most amazing feel I had yet to ever feel.
Eventually I made my way back around home and landed on the building gracefully. I ran over to my bag then dug through and grabbed out my mask. I quickly put my hair back into a braid and attached the mask. Time to have some more fun.
I must have been at least 8 blocks when I began to descend down to the streets. I dropped into the ally way with a bit of a thud after jumping off the fire escape. I walk out of the alley way and down the street. I put my hands into the pockets of my black hoodie and hummed when I heard what sounded like muffled screams. I quickly turned down the alley way I heard it come from. At the end I saw a tall bulky man with a knife trying to rob a woman. I whistled loudly getting the attention of the man. "Hey dirt bag now there is no need to be doing things like that is there" I said in a cocky tone. "You better scram little girl" He said harsh pointing his knife at me. I put my hand over my heart and made a hurt face "Rude fuck" I said continuing to walk towards him. "I SAID SCRAM BEFORE I CUT YOU" He yelled at me in a menacing tone. I just sighed. I grabbed his shoulder pulling him towards me. He turned around and before he could do anything I gave him a swift punch to the jaw. He held his jaw looking at me with pure hatred. "You fucked up bitch" He said gripping his knife and lunging towards me.
I side stepped so he ran right past me but he quickly recovered coming at me with the knife again. He swung it down towards by head but I blocked his arm and punch him in the face again. He stumbled back and came at me again swinging a punch towards my head. I yelped and rolled to get behind him. I then popped up and gave him a solid kick to the kidney. He hit the ground trying to catch his breathe. I smirked and turned around looking for the woman when I didn't see her I assumed she must have run off. So I just turned around and strutted out of the alley way putting my hand back into my pocket and head home.
Once I got back to the building I hopped up onto the fire escape and climbed back to the roof. Once on the roof I took off my boots and mask and stuffed them into my duffle bag and went inside. I walked down the stairs and into the apartment not seeing Shayne there. I just ignored it and went to my room dropping my bag and flopping onto the bed and falling asleep.
The next day I woke up late and went downstairs to watch the news. Nothing much happening on the news just the normal things. I heard shuffling behind me and saw Shayne's reflection in my coffee mug. "Morning Shayne how's it going" I said still happy from last night. "Its fine just tired from work" she said clearly needing her coffee. "Rough night at work?" I ask taking a sip of my coffee. "mmmm Just the stupid criminals doing stupid shit like always" She grumbled while still smiling. I just chuckled turning back to the TV. Just as I went back to watching the news something interesting came on. It was phone footage of a fight in an alley way. Only problem was that when the person that won the fight turned around I could clearly see my mask and hoodie.
"Hhm that's interesting. Maybe a new hero?" Shayne said sarcastically leaning over the couch clutching her coffee mug. I raised my eyebrow "Well I would say more of a vigilante they seem like the kind of person who doesn't like the word hero" I said taking a sip of my coffee. Shayne just rolled her eyes then plopped down on the seat next to me. "I think your just dramatic" She said in a teasing tone. I nodded "well you're not wrong there" I said pointing finger guns at her. She laughed which brought a small smile to my face before quickly turning away.
I spent the day chatting with Shayne and watching TV. It was pleasant she is a really sweet person almost sickly so. She grew up in a nice family with money. Used to live in Michigan before she moved out to NYC when she was 18. Apparently her parents paid for her first years rent before she could pay herself. Sounds like a nice life. She asked me questions as well but I managed to be fairly vague. I have never been the person to be open. Never. But she tried and eventually gave up and we just watched TV until she got a call and said she had to head out. I waved her off as she left then went up to my room.
Idecided to go to the pawn shop I used to work at to find something I waslooking for. I threw my bag onto my shoulder and headed out. After the walk tothe pawn shop I went in to find Dave working the counter as usual. "Hey Foxyit's been a few weeks since I have seen you" Dave said looking happy to see me."Hey Dave good to see you I'm looking for a few things" I said walking up tothe counter. "Cool what do you need" He said giving me a nod. I looked aroundthe shop quickly when I saw what I needed. "That dagger and those spray paints"I said pointing out what I wanted. "Ok cool cool that will be 87.13" he said. Ihanded him a hundred dollar bill "Keep the change" I mumbled grabbing the daggerand spray paint and heading out giving Dave a quick wave.
