Birds of Prey

Birds of Prey is the DC film and the eighth installment in the DCEU as it is a spin-off to Suicide Squad as it is directed by Cathy Yan and was released in 2019. This is fun, unique, and a great addition to the DCEU. But while it is a fun film, it's one I am mixed about.

Margot Robbie gets to go full Harley Quinn which was great to finally see as she was the best character in Suicide Squad so it was great to see more of her in this film. Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya were all great additions as their characters were fun to watch. Out of them, Huntress is probably my favorite. The film had a great villain portrayed by Ewan McGregor as Black Mask was so fun to watch and has a lot of tension to his scenes, it was obvious he was having fun in the role. Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz was great as he had a great dynamic with Black Mask.

The film is about Harley Quinn after she breaks-up with the Joker, as she has to team up with Huntress, Black Canary, and Renee Montoya to save Cassandra Cain from Black Mask as they form the Birds of Prey. The main thing I liked about the film is the action scenes as they were amazing and it can be brutal at times which was great. I liked the style of the film as it felt unique and artsy. It was a fun movie that was funny from beginning to end, especially of Harley Quinn.

However, my opinions are a bit mixed. I wish there were more to the characters in the film. Renee Montoya was just a typical cop getting screwed over. Cassandra Cain at times would be an annoying kid in the film, and completely different from her comic counterpart that might upset some. There is also some stuff within the story with several characters that threw me off as it felt they wasted great characters, especially the antagonists.

Overall besides my flaws, I thought it was a fun movie. Best DCEU movie? No. The more I think about this film, the more I become mixed about it, but at the same time the more I like it because of Harley.
