Chapter 29 Midnight

It was midnight, Tine and Sarawat were in the smoking room with Fukuda and Ryo, after a while Ryo stood up and said

"Akio... I think that I will go to bed now... I'm pretty tired..." Ryo said yawning, Fukuda looked at him 

"Do you want me to come with you?"

"No... don't worry, just don't come back too late ok?" Ryo said, Akio nodded so Ryo smiled and left the room. 

"So... Fukuda san... do you think that you will spend a lot of time in Thailand or you will leave soon?" Tine asked

"Actually I don't know, I will probably stay for a week or two... but the ministry could call whenever it's necessary so... I don't know" Fukuda replied. 

"Sarawat... I have to go outside for a moment...  I feel a little uncomfortable because of all this smoke" Tine said standing up, he took his coat and went to the promenade deck, Sarawat and Akio were still chatting. 

"Sir... what is that?" a low rank officer asked

"What do you mean?" the first officer asked

"Do you see it? In the water... more or less 1500 meters... wait... is that..." 

"Oh God...  it's a periscope..." the first officer whispered, he ran back inside and started ordering

"Hard to starboard, full astern" the officer said with a pretty calm tone

"Yes sir" the sailors replied calmly, everyone wasn't that worried actually, they knew that their country was at war and it wasn't unusual to find an enemy submarine... the officer went back outside to see if the submarine was still there, the periscope was no longer visible, he remained outside 

"All ahead full..." the officer said with an almost bored yet relieved tone, he looked at the sea amd at the waves that kept hitting against the hull... when suddenly his eyes widened, it was like the time was now going too fast and too slow at the same moment. It was just a matter of moment... when he spotted a mine in the water... 

"Don't you want to come back ins..." the second officer started when they heard the noise of a muffled explosion and the water rising like a giant monster from the abyss. 

"Sir! Sir! Orders! Sir!" the second officer said shaking him

"C... close the watertight doors..."

"Yes sir!"

"And... and stop the engine..." 

A few minutes later Tine went back inside, he looked pretty confused and asked

"Sarawat... is it just me or the ship stopped?" 

"What? You're just tired... let's go to bed ok?" Sarawat said, he stood up and bowed in front of Fukuda then he went back to his cabin with Tine.

"Tine? Are you alright?" Sarawat asked as he noticed that Tine was shivering

"Yes... yes I'm ok... isn't it cold?..." 

"Would you turn on the heaters please? And prepare a cup of tea for Tine as well..." Sarawat said and the two maids immediately started working. 

"Do you want to sleep?"

"I... I don't feel sleepy Sarawat..." Tine replied when someone knocked

"What is it now?" Sarawat said irritated, a maid opened the door and a steward entered the room, he opened a locker with his keys and took a few life-jackets

"These are for you sir, you should go to the boat deck as soon as possible" the steward said and left. 

The captain went back to the bridge and the first officer explained what happened, another officer came more or less ten minutes later, he looked like he saw the Death in front of him

"So... what is the situation?"

"Sir... only two compartments involed by the explosion... but the problem is that someone sabotaged the watertight doors system... the doors of the first six compartments aren't working... so the water is already spreading..." 

"Prepare the lifeboats... and send an SOS"

"Yes sir" 

Sarawat and Tine went to the boat deck, everyone looked pretty calm and it was almost surreal, Tine was almost freezing, Sarawat looked outside

"Tine, wait here, I'm going to check what's going on" Sarawat said, he opened the door, he looked around and noticed that there were a lot of people fro the third class was coming out of the third class entrance. 

"So, should we go outside?" Tine asked as Sarawat came back

"N... no, it isn't necessary... they're still preparing the boats... and it's so terribly cold and noisy so it's better to stay here" Sarawat replied 

"Well, good... but did they tell you what's going on?" Tine asked

"I don't know... maybe it's just another safety drill... they didn't say anything about it" Sarawat replied. They waited there for a few minutes when they noticed Fukuda going up and down the grand staircase, he looked confused and concerned, Sarawat stopped him

"What's wrong Fukuda san?"

"Have you seen Ryo? I can't find him... and Nakano disappeared too" Akio replied worried

"Ok, I will come with you" Sarawat said

"Well... I will go back to our cabin and get some other coats... we will meet again here ok?" Tine said and stood up

"Ok." both Akio and Sarawat replied
