Today, had been awful

Today, had been awful. First, my Math teacher had us take a test. Then, I mispronounced a word in Spanish. In front of the whole class. I hated myself for that. I couldn't believe that I, Hunter Brooks, the most popular guy in school, had made a fool of myself in Spanish. I normally aced it.

Of course, after my experience in Spanish, it seemed as if I was destined for bad luck today. In English, we were supposed to do an essay, but there was a substitute. Sounds great, right? Not. That substitute made us write the essay, and then some and if we didn't finish, we got detention. Normally, if you're a few words off the minimum, Mr.White, the normal teacher, will let it slide. Not this substitute, though. I was a few words off the minimum and she called me out on it. And gave me a detention. Detention!

Now that it was lunch, I was hoping to have a fun time. Just to even out the day. Nope, that didn't happen either. As soon as I sat down, Oliver bombarded me with questions about my 'grumpy face' as he called it. Then he told me to be nice as he had invited his bio partner and her friend to sit with us. That was what caught my attention.

"You did what?!" Oliver rolled his eyes at my outburst. "My bio partner, Lizzie, and her friend are going to sit with us at lunch. At least, if her friend agrees." He added that part almost as an after thought. I was about to retort back, when I remembered my encounter with Lizzie in the hallway. She had seemed shy, almost unwilling to talk.

Her glossy black hair and pale eyes... What was I thinking? I didn't even know the girl, let alone have a conversation with her. Clearing my thoughts, I looked up as two girls sat down across from Logan and me. One was Lizzie, and the other, I assumed her friend that Oliver mentioned.

As Oliver introduced them to the table, I watched as Lizzie's eyes flickered around, seemingly looking for an escape route. Well, I hope she was. I gave a small wave and Logan just nodded his head. Oliver was quick to start a conversation with the redhead, Harper, I think. I watched as Lizzie dazed out and was brought back when Oliver directed the conversation towards her.

She flushed, then had to respond. Lizzie seemed nervous, shaky even. When her hands moved on the table, they shook. To someone passing by, you'd think she was fine. But, if you paid any attention -  like I do - you would notice something was off. Yeah, sitting at a new table is different and nerve-racking, but you stop shaking after a few minutes. Not Lizzie, though.

As lunch continued, she seemed to get even more nervous. She jumped at the loud noises the other students made. And, every time Harper would touch her shoulder with her own, she would flinch away. It was confusing, even to someone as smart as I am. The bell rang, signaling that lunch was over.

Lizzie scurried away with a quick 'good-bye' to Oliver, Harper tagging along. I headed to one of my favorite subjects, history. At least, this class would go by quick. I hope.

After school, I had football practice. The first practice of the season. My first practice as a senior. I was pumped. This year, I had to impress everyone. There would be scouts looking at me for football scholarships. Luckily, I was one of the best players of the year, at least, that's what my coach said.

As I walked out to the field, Oliver and Logan following behind, some of the newbies looked at me like I was a king. At football, I practically was. I smirked. Let's do this.
