Y/N often wondered why she was friends with Jacob. Maybe if she hadn't made friends with him then she might have made other friends. Being friends with Jacob really limited the amount of people you could be friends with, knowing that you tolerated Jacob Thrombey was a bit of a turn off for most people. But she had been new to the school, she needed someone to hang around with and seeing as Jacob had reached out to her in that English class, she figured he'd do for the time being.
It wasn't like she could really pick and choose who she wanted to hang around with, not with her background. When she'd walked into the school she'd immediately decided that if she was going to fit in- she'd have to pretend to be completely different. Instead of her paying for her own house and food by working three jobs, she was living in luxury from her parents wages who had a fashion company, business, thing...
Of course, she didn't have to worry about money too much when she became friends with the Thrombey's. Y/N thought that they were all surprised to see Jacob with an actual person his age- who wasn't screaming at him about his political views. So that was why they were nice to Y/N, they wanted to keep the nazi-child's friend around, at least that was what Y/N figured.
Walt was pretty nice to her, he always looked happy when he saw her hanging around with Jacob. And then, of course, Meg liked her too. She was sort of like an older sister to Y/N. In fact, she was the only person who knew about Y/N's real homelife. She'd found out by mistake when she was driving through her neighbourhood after coming back from a party with her friends. She'd seen Y/N walking out of her tiny house and Y/N hadn't come up with an excuse fast enough.
Meg had always given her old clothes of hers, so that she wouldn't have to keep on washing the same outfit everyday for school. But they shouldn't judge Y/N too much, she was poor but she wasn't stupid. And she didn't take crap from anyone. She'd called Jacob out on his political views more than once. She wondered why Jacob was still friends with her, actually.
She was sat on the couch in Harlan Thrombey's house, he was nice to her too and had given her money on more than one occasion. It was like a regular thing- it was the only reason Y/N had time to hang out with Jacob outside of school. The money Harlan gave her was enough for her to quit two of her jobs- now she only worked one at it was on weekends. Yes, Harlan did give her quite a lot.
He'd slip her a check now and again, "You've been great helping Fran clean up today, take this as a reward." He'd always try to make it seem like Y/N had done something to earn it, even though the things he claimed she'd done were just common courtesy for her. Sometimes she wondered if Meg had told Harlan about her home life and maybe that was why he gave her money all of the time.
But that wouldn't make sense because she trusted Meg and she promised she wouldn't tell a soul. It didn't really matter, the only people she didn't want to know about it were Linda, Richard, Ransom and Jacob because she knew that they would be snobby about it. After all, Richard was always asking about her parents fashion business. It was lucky that Y/N was such a good liar, or she'd never had been able to keep up with all the lies she'd told them all about it.
Jacob was sat next to her, staring at his phone. He groaned which took Y/N out of her trial of thoughts and she looked at him, raising an eyebrow. "You okay, Jake?"
He shook her head and continued to type away at him phone. He made no effort to tell her why he was mad. It was probably something political and he knew how mad she got at him over stuff he said sometimes, which was why sometimes he just kept his mouth shut. But that day was not one of those days, clearly.
"These stupid refugees need to get out of our country, they're taking all of our jobs- it's an outrage." He argued which made a few people from the other side of the living room look up at him and wait for the argument to begin.
"What? They're people. They just want a better life for themselves, they're not taking anyone's jobs!" Y/N told him and heard Richard sit forwards on the other couch, pointing at her with his glass of red wine.
"Actually, if you look at statistics-" He started before Joni cut him off with a groan and an eye roll to end all eye rolls.
"Oh here we go again. Back at it with the statistics."
And the argument took off from there, with every comment made, another person joined in the argument until there was a screaming match taking place in the middle of the living room. Jacob sighed softly and looked at Y/N playfully grinning at her. "See what you've started?"
"It's every Saturday night with you lot. Seems like you've all got very different views on basic human rights." Y/N responded and shrugged, leaning against the back of the couch and looking at Jacob. Nobody was listening in on their conversation, they were all too busy shouting at eachother.
"Where's Marta? Get Marta in here!" Richard ordered and Joni shook her head and laughed at him.
"Oh, do not!"
Y/N looked at Jacob who had promptly looked back at his phone, tired of watching the live entertainment play out in front of him. Maybe if he spent less time on his phone, he'd have higher grades at school. She nudged his arm playfully. "Hey, asshole, aren't you going to watch the argument?"
Jacob sighed and looked away from his phone screen and at her for a moment. "Why would I want to do that?"
"It's theatre. It's live theatre." Y/N told him.
He grinned a bit and reluctantly turned his phone off before leaning against the back of the couch and looking at his family fight and argue. "You start some good arguments."
