Y/N sighed softly as she stood up from the couch, brushing herself off. She just wanted to go and talk to Harlan's attorney, she needed to talk to him. Harlan knew he'd be useful to talk to otherwise he wouldn't have mentioned him to her. She brushed herself off and stretched before walking to the door. She looked through the glass pane in the door and saw a familiar silhouette, she sighed the relief.
She opened the door and saw the expected, it was just Meg. Meg smiled at her as she stood on her doorstep dressed in her scarf, hat and gloves. It was cold outside. "Hey, Meg." Y/N smiled back at her and stepped aside to allow Meg to walk into her small but definitely warm house.
"Hey, Y/N." A voice sounded which forced Y/N to look back at Meg quickly. That definitely wasn't Meg's voice, but she couldn't see anyone else there. Who the hell had-
Jacob stepped around from the corner, he'd been hiding himself pressed against the wall until then- when he revealed himself. Y/N still wanted to be mad at him after he'd abandoned her so fast but she knew she had no right to be mad. After all, she lied about her whole existence.
Jacob's nose was pink from the cold and he was dressed in his overpriced winter coat, the colour of a washed out blue-towel and he had a beanie pulled over his head. She guessed he wouldn't be too happy about that hat ruining his hair. But then the initial shock and surprise of Jacob revealing himself wore off and Y/N started to panic.
This was the first time Jacob had ever seen her house! Her tiny house which was probably the size of his bedroom. She felt embarrassed immediately and stepped in front of the door again, unwilling to let them in. "Oh, you're here?" Y/N replied, although it came across more of a question than a statement. He nodded in response.
"Jacob here was nagging me to bring him here, sorry. He wanted to see y-"
"Your house." Jacob cut Meg off, stepping forwards a little. "I just wanted to see your... house." He answered, giving Meg a cold glare as if he was about to yank out a pair of nun-chucks and beat her over the head. Y/N looked around her living room, looking at the pathetic size of it and the sheer mess of it. She didn't really want anybody to go in there, let alone Jacob and his snobby attitude.
"Great." Y/N answered and turned to look at Meg, trying her best to not talk to Jacob the best she could manage. "Well, I was just about to head out. So.." She looked at the two of them, she saw Meg nod and step back as if she were going to leave as Y/N had asked. But she turned her attention to Jacob and saw that there was no look of 'about to leave' in his eyes.
"So. I guess we'll just have to make the visit quick." Jacob shrugged, Y/N should have known he wasn't going to admit surrender that quickly. Y/N opened her mouth to object once again but Jacob was quicker and he barged his way inside of Y/N little home before she could stop him.
The feeling of sheer embarrassment as she watched Jacob walk inside, eyes peering around the place, was indescribable. Meg had been inside her house before, she was fine with that, but it was Jacob who she never thought would ever be in her street- let alone in her living room. Y/N felt her stomach sink a thousand miles and she looked away as Jacob examined the room. Meg wrapped an arm around Y/N.
The few seconds of Jacob looking around felt like an eternity of dread and embarrassment. Couldn't he just hurry up, insult her and leave again? Jacob slowly turned his head to the side, he didn't quite look directly at her though. Maybe he was disgusted or maybe he was embarrassed for her...
"So... you really are poor then." He answered, voice soft but not soft enough for Meg to not clip him across the back of his head with her palm.
"Shut up, Jacob." Meg snapped at him as he winced with pain at the slap he'd received. He raised his hand to the back of his head and turned around to look at them both properly.
"Uh- ouch. I didn't mean it in a bad way. Well... it's bad but I didn't say it to be insulting. I just meant that- that she really was..." He paused, as if his words were hurting him, "...lying the whole time." He said and looked at them in silence for a few seconds before sighing and looking away. He spotted Harlan's novel on her coffee table and a small smile appeared on his face, "Well, you didn't lie about loving his books, I guess."
Y/N smiled half-heartedly and shrugged, "Well, they're pretty good books. Always have been." She looked at him for a moment before moving away from Meg and taking a step towards the door. "Look, I've really got to head out. There's someone I have to see." She answered and looked at the door, gesturing for them to both leave as she remembered she had to speak to Harlan's attorney.
"Oh, right, yeah... okay." Jacob said and headed to the door with Meg, stepping back outside into the cold. He seemed reluctant to leave. "Well, I'll see you at school." He said before thinking it through, he figured it out moments after he'd said it. His face inhabited a frown. "I mean... I guess I'll see you again, at some point." He replied before heading down the street and climbing into Megs car quickly, not wanting to talk to anyone anymore.
"See you soon, Y/N." Meg gave her a smile before leaving again and getting into the car with Jacob.
Y/N sighed and closed the door as she stepped outside too, she found herself thinking about Jacob... again. But she had to stop, she had something else to focus on.
