Y/N awoke in the middle of the night, mouth feeling like the desert.

"North," she whispered, and his eye snapped open.

      "What?"

      "Were you... awake?" she asked.

"I'm a light sleeper," he explained, propping himself up on an elbow. "What is it?"

"I'm thirsty," Y/N whispered. "Can I go get a glass of water?"

The country yawned, lying back down. "You don't have to ask- just go."

"I didn't want you to wake up alone," she said, and got the impression that North blinked in surprise. His single eye closed longer than usual before opening. The dark hollow of the other one stared back at her.

"Oh. Okay." He turned his face from her. "If you see China wandering around, tell him to stop sleuthing and go back to sleep."

Y/N nodded and left, taking the stairs. The halls were dark and silent as she headed downstairs. The guards at every level regarded her uncuriously.

She got a glass of tap water from the kitchen, chugged it, then started to head back up, when she heard someone coming down the stairs.

It was the woman from earlier, re-wrapping her fur shawl around her shoulders, and blowing a kiss to China, before strutting out the door.

"You snuck her in?" Y/N asked from the shadows of the stairs, not having the satisfaction of seeing the Countryhuman jump.

"Don't tell on me, and I won't tell on you," he said. She instantly knew what he was talking about.

"R-Right," she said nervously. "Goodnight, then." She started for the staircase.

"Wait- share some tea with me, first." China headed for the dining hall.

"I want to-" She cut herself off, blushing.

"Get back to North?" China asked suggestively. "Don't worry- I know."

"Did... North tell you?" the girl asked, still lingering by the stairs.

"Mm, something like that." Seeing her hesitation, he cajoled, "I don't bite. I just want to talk to you."

Reluctantly, Y/N followed him to the dining hall. "North says I'm supposed to tell you to stop sleuthing and go to sleep."

"Typical North," China laughed. "No trust." He switched on the hot plate with the tea kettle on it. "But he seems to trust you." The country took a seat, and patted the cushion next to him.

"I don't think that he does." Y/N sat hesitantly, suspicious.

"He must, if he's letting you sleep with him. You're still wearing your translator, by the way."

Surprised, Y/N held a hand to her ear. He was right- the earpiece was still clipped on, translating his Chinese. She had gotten used to the robotic voice chiming in her ear.

"'Light-weight, and discrete,'" China quoted. "Perfect. You can keep that one, by the way."

"What do I owe you for it?" Y/N asked warily, making China laugh again.

"Clever girl." He shifted, the neck of the red silk robe that he had changed into opening slightly. "For once- nothing. It's free."

"Are you really a Communist?" Y/N asked suspiciously.
