Cassey sat on the floor in her room, her nose dripping with crimson liquid. She listened as footsteps got fainter. Once they were almost gone she opened her closet revealing a small boy, only 3 years younger than her. She gave a faint smile

"Its ok Collin, he's gone."

The small boy, Collin, crawled out of the closet and hugged Cassey. Collin's eyes puffy from sobbing. Cassey put her sleeve against her bloody nose and held Collin. Ever since her dad turned to religion she vowed to keep her little brother safe. She stood up and grabbed her AP psychology book and glasses to start her homework. Collin sat on her bed, wrapping blankets around him. He stared at his big sister, feeling guilty she was bruised to save him. Cassey sat down next to him and smiled,

"Did you know tha-"

Suddenly loud music started to play, making Collin scoot closer to Cassey. Their father was wth their mom now, the music hid what they were doing. What he was doing. But it also ment that the two of them had time to do anything they needed around the house. Cassey set her book down and gently opened the door to the hall. Collin grabbed her arm cautiously, hiding behind her in the process. Cassey walked them down the hall, past the door with the source of the music and their parents. The two children walked to the kitchen, grabbing small snacks and cups of water to take with them into Cassey's room.

"You need a bath tonight? Or anything else?"

Cassey whispered to her brother. He shook his head slowly. Cassey laughed quietly,

"Would you like to take one?"

Collin shook his head again as the music stopped. They two held their breath, wide eyed. Suddenly they heard the bedroom door open. Cassey quickly threw what she had in her hands onto the counter and opened the cabinets under the sink, pushing Collin in and closing them. Suddenly a tall, slender man walked into the kitchen looking displeased,

"Why is the kitchen a mess?"

Cassey slowly started to put things away in silence. She learned early that when asked a question you acted and never spoke. She felt her father's eyes burning into the back of her head as she cleaned.

"I asked why the kitchen is a mess, are you going to answer?"

When asked again you always answered,

"I was making myself a snack for studying, sir."

She looked at her father as she put things away.

"Mmmm. And once again where is Collin?"

Cassey readied herself for what was to come next,

"I have no idea, sir."

Suddenly Cassey fell as she got slapped, her glasses falling off her face and skidding away

"Stop lying, no man will want a lying bitch. This is the last time I'll ask or you'll be severely punished. Where. Is. He?"

Cassey wiped a few tears from her face before she let out a breath and shrugged. Her father grabbed her hair and dragged her, Cassey screaming as she tried to get away. Once into the bathroom her father pushed Cassey into the shower, grabbing for soap. Her punishment would have her spitting bubbles for weeks.

Cassey knew the consequences of her actions but never cared as long as her brother was safe. She would go through it all to keep him safe.

Once her father was back in his room and she wasn't throwing up soap, Cassey went back to the kitchen to get her brother. Collin looked at her and quickly hugged his sister. She went and grabbed her glasses before grabbing Collin's hand, taking him back to her room where he'd be safe. This was a daily thing. Niether one never knew when the last time they would see the other would be. But they would stay together through it all, or at least try to.
