When school started again, I spent many days in the library with Terry and Cho as we talked endlessly about the books we had read over Christmas. On one of these days the three of us were sitting around a table in the library when we over heard a conversation between Potter, Granger and Weasley.
"How could I be so stupid, I checked this out weeks ago for a bit of light reading." Granger said slamming a huge book onto the table.
"This is light?" Weasley said in shock, Hermione glared at him.
"Of course, here it is, Nicholas Flamel is the only known maker of the philosopher stone!"
"The what?!" Potter and Weasley said in unison.
"Honestly don't you two read?" Hermione said. "The philosopher stone is the legendary substance with astonishing powers, it will transfer any metal into pure gold and produce the elixir of life which will make the drinker immortal." Hermione read aloud.
"Immortal?" Ron asked.
"It means you'll never die." Hermione replied.
"I know what it means." Ron replied bitterly, whilst Harry shushed him.
"The only stone in existence belongs to Nicholas Flamel, who last year celebrated is 665 birthday. That's what Fluffy's guarding on the third floor, that's what's under the trap door, the philosopher stone!" Hermione told them. Terry and I looked at each other.
"But what would anyone want with the philosopher stone?" I whispered to him.
"Well anyone that wants to live forever." He replied.
"Or what if the person who wants it is on the verge of death and needs it?" Cho chipped in.
"Living forever is unnatural, it defies the only thing we know for sure. That death is inevitable. Only someone who uses dark magic would want to live forever." I replied.
"You-Know-Who would want to live forever." Terry mumbled.
"Don't talk like that Terry!" Cho said, her voice laced with fear.
"Terry's right! You-Know-Who's body was never found he just disappeared. He is the only dark wizard with an ego big enough to want to be immortal and it's possible he's on the verge of death and sees this as the best way to return." I said.
"Guys seriously don't talk like that. The amount of lives lost to him. It's, It's, It's unfathomable." Cho said horror creeping onto her face.
That evening Michael, Terry, Anthony, Cho and I snuck into the secret room once everyone had gone to bed. Michael continued on the mural and I noticed that three more Hogweeds had been painted onto the walls. Terry had bought something he read about in a muggle book called a television and was setting it up but struggling desperately. Anthony kept taunting Terry every time he failed to change a goblet to a muggle power source.
"What do you think of Harry Potter?" Cho asked me.
"I mean we're in most of the same classes but we don't really talk."
"Yeah but what do you think of him?"
"He's nice, smart, brave and also a Gryffindor."
"What do you mean by a Gryffindor?"
"Fear is rational it's a feeling that keeps you safe. Being brave is all well and good but if it comes without intelligence you're putting yourself into dangerous situations because you want to prove your courage. I don't deny that they are nice people and loyal friends but it just not that sensible of a quality. Why do you ask?"
