chapter sixty-one. house of treachery

            It's midnight, and I haven't gotten any sleep at all. I keep tossing and turning in my bed, and at one point, I even went to wash my face again, then borrowed one of Amber's sleeping eye masks she left behind, but neither of those helped at all. It wasn't light keeping me from sleep, it was those feelings of complete and utter dread. I still don't understand, and actually.... I'm not so sure I want to.

            That's why I'm awake when the door opens lightly. I look over, almost expecting Trudy to tell me that Alfie and Jerome got themselves into trouble again, but instead, it's KT. "KT?" I ask in a whisper. It's midnight, the only reason she would be opening my door would be Sibuna. "What are you doing?"

            "Are you already awake?" she asks me. I nod, pulling on my shoes as I go to her, quietly closing the door behind me. "Fabian and Eddie asked me to get you. Fabian heard a crash and he thinks something's wrong."

            "A crash?" I inquire. "What kind of a crash?"

            "I didn't ask. We should get Patricia."

            "Uh..." I look back at the door, hesitant to agree. But I still do. "You can wake her. I'll go meet Fabian and Eddie downstairs." KT nods and opens the door again as I head for the stairs, finding both boys and Alfie already waiting. "What's this about a crash?"

            Fabian explains how ten minutes earlier, he was rudely awoken by the sound of a crash. And he just knew something was wrong, he said, which is why he needs all of us to search the house for whatever crashed. Eddie also mentioned he nearly karate-chopped Fabian when he woke him up, which wasn't relevant but an amusing image.

            When KT and Patricia come down the stairs, Eddie goes straight into Osirian-mode and gives us each areas of the house to search. KT and I are going down to the cellar through the oven, Eddie takes the dining and living rooms along with the kitchen, Alfie takes the rest of the downstairs area, and Fabian and Patricia go upstairs to look.

            I use my charm and Nina's locket to open our secret entrance to the cellar. "Americans first."

            KT purses her lips and shakes her head. "No, Bringer of Death first, of course."

            "Wimp."

            "Double wimp."

            I laugh lightly as I go through the entrance first, brushing the dirt off my pajamas once I'm inside the cellar. When KT makes it in, we each take half of the room and I find nothing on mine. Meeting in front of the entrance to the antechamber, she found nothing either, which leaves the antechamber to be checked. And just like everywhere else, the antechamber is exactly as we left it. Nothing that crashed or anything.
