The street light lit up the night as Ruby made her way to (Y/N)'s apartment, her teammates walking closely behind her.

Yoshida's words echoed in her mind:

"This job, it demands a lot. But you were on his mind every day. He loved you more than anything else in the world."

Ruby felt like she was going to break down. She had a couple tears here and there, but she kept her composure. She didn't know why, but she felt like she had an obligation to keep from crying.

At this point, her optimism was gone. There was no such thing as happily ever after. (Y/N) was the one thing she truly loved. She never cared if she became a huntress or not, as long as she could be with (Y/N). Even after getting mad at him, she'd hoped that things could get better, and she could reunite with him and marry him. But now the world had taken him away from her.

If she couldn't be with (Y/N), does hope really exist?

Ruby finally got to the apartment, and she walked over to the receptionist. However, he was asleep.

Weiss banged on the glass, trying to wake him up. "Excuse me!" He didn't budge. "Fine, you lazy prick!"

Ruby walked over to the mailboxes. She found (Y/N)'s, and pulled out the keys. She unlocked the mailbox, and opened it, seeing lots of envelopes stacked inside.

"Hey," Yang said, putting her hand on her shoulder. "Are you sure you're okay?"

"I'm fine, Yang!" she said. "If you don't mind, I'd like you to leave. I want to be alone."

Yang sighed. "Okay. Text us if you need anything, alright?"

"Yeah," Blake said. "Remember, we're here for you."

"If you ever need anything," Weiss said, "give us a call. And remember, I know Atlas more than any of you. Let me know if you need anything."

And with that, Weiss, Blake, and Yang left Ruby alone in the apartment.

Ruby walked up the stairs, and looked through the hallways for (Y/N)'s apartment. Soon, she found it, and she used the keys to unlock the door and walk in.

She sighed. The room was very neatly organized. A desk was at the end of the room, obviously where he would do his detective work. She surveyed the room, and saw lots of his childhood mystery movies that he'd watch with her: Sherlock Holmes, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Se7en, Scooby Doo, etc.

She smiled as she remembered watching them with him. She remembered resting her head on his shoulder, as they tried to come up with theories as to who the villain was. Ruby would occasionally get it right, and (Y/N) would always get it right.

"Still with the mystery movies, huh?" she said.

She pulled Crescent Rose from her waist, and placed it on a couch. She looked on the wall to see his badge and rewards. She smiled. Though they were separated for years, they were both following their dreams and succeeding. And though she wished he cared more for her than his whole detective thing, she couldn't help but feel proud of him for everything he'd done.

She walked over to his desk, and saw a newspaper that said, "More remains at Ancient Mew unearthed at Atlas dig site". She was confused. What was a "Mew"?

Then, she noticed something. A small tube, filled with some kind of purple gas. She picked it up, and started to inspect it. She noticed a button. Filled with curiosity, she pressed it.

Suddenly, the purple gas shot out of the tube, and into Ruby's face. She coughed. It smelled incredibly foul. She opened up the window, and held out the tube, causing the weird gas to fly away with the wind.

Unbeknownst to Ruby, the gas was brought to a group of sunstealers hiding in an alley.

They turned around, and growled loudly, their red markings turning purple.

Back in the apartment, the gas had gone completely out the window, and Ruby pulled herself back in, coughing and gagging.

"What is that stuff?" she said, tossing the tube into the trash.

She walked into (Y/N)'s room. She looked around at the very neatly organized room. On his cabinet, she saw an envelope. Curious, she walked over to it, and picked it up.

"Ruby Rose"

It was a letter for her?

She opened it, and pulled out the card. It was a Happy Birthday card. She felt like she was going to cry again, but she refrained from doing so.

But still, he remembered her birthday!

She opened it, finding a credit card inside. She moved it aside, and saw a note he'd written on the card.

She read it aloud, "'Dear Ruby. I could do better if you give me a chance. I'll always have a place for you.'"

She sighed, remembering the call that day. Regret started to fill her heart as she remembered how harsh she'd been to him, and flashbacks of the many times he'd loved and supported her filled her head.

She started tearing up.

Then, she heard a creaking noise in the other room...
