Chapter 29

-UNKNOWN POV-

(YEAR 1018)

It is eighteen years after the turn of the first millennium. It is the year that humans will continue to see their share of political intrigue and military conflict against one another. There were endless battles and wars being fought with many casualties and deaths for the sole purpose of expanding more lands, obtaining more fortunes, and claiming more power. Every day seemed like a survival of the fittest for humans, and I pity the unfortunate souls who were born at the bottom of the food chain. Silly humans and their quest for power struggles never cease to amaze me.

I guess I could say the same thing for our kind; we are no better than them, though my family would disagree with my statement. However, I know the glaring truth: I am neither blind nor foollike like the rest of them. There are also many werewolves in each pack all throughout the world who are suffering just for being born at the bottom of the food chain; they are called the omegas, and there are a lot more of them than my father would care to admit. Whatever the creature, there is always a certain unfair inequality in status, rights, and opportunities.

That is just how the wheel spins.

Is what my older brother would say to me. Oh, how I wish I could destroy that stupid wheel, but sadly, that dream of mine is just far out of my reach, almost the same as my own fate.

This is just the unfair reality of life.

Anyway, not only is this day the eighteenth anniversary of the turn of the first millennium, but it just so happens that today is also the eighteenth anniversary of my existence here in the world. I was literally born at the exact turn of the first millennium, which made my parents even more convinced that I was lucky and would bring our whole kingdom even more blessings from the goddess Selene.

I think not, though. But no one really cared for what I thought or felt.

"You look as exquisite as ever, darling sister," my older brother, Aayden, commented, carefully eyeing my look up and down with his ever-scrupulous dark orbs, making sure that each detail of my gown and make-up was perfect.

Aayden, my parents, and the rest of my family all desired one thing out of anything and anyone: absolute perfection.

I couldn't help but roll my eyes. I often wonder why I'm the only one who doesn't think the same as them.

"None of that eye rolling now, sister. You're ruining your beautiful face that the Goddess has graciously gifted you," he scolded.

"I apologise, dear brother." I sighed and brought my hand up to my chest to play with my pendant.

Aayden sighs and flashes me his perfect white teeth smile that all maidens, mateless or not, find rather charming. Believe it or not, I even saw one maiden, perhaps the daughter of an Alpha or Beta, faint as my brother walked past her and flashed her his dashing smile.

"Come on then. Everyone is waiting." He quickly took my hand and led me out of my bed chamber, through the long halls, until we reached the high doors, where everyone was indeed waiting for us behind.

I just really wish for this day to be over, and I also do wish that my mate isn't one of them. I hope not to find him here amongst the snobby, entitled, and self-absorbed sons of the Alphas my father and mother invited all around the neighbouring royal and noble packs.

"I don't even know why mother and father continue to invite them each year of my birthday when it's already clear since the day I turned sixteen that none of them is my mate." I couldn't help but let out a disappointing sigh as I have already been through this tedious affair since I turned of age where I should have already found my destined soulmate.

You see, not only is today another celebration of my birth, but it is also a three-year quest for me to find my destined soulmate. However, my parents keep inviting the same royal and noble packs with only their high-ranking members, as they keep on expecting and insisting to me that my mate should just be another one of them. But I've already met every single one of them—every son, brother, cousin, and nephew of the Alphas, Betas, Deltas, and Gammas—since I was sixteen, and still nothing.

"This is just another waste of time, brother. Why couldn't we just celebrate my birthday?"

Aayden gave me a pointed look and asked,

"Are you already losing hope of finding your mate, dear sister?"

"Of course not. I just know that my mate isn't one of these wolves our parents invited, so why waste time socialising with them?" I shrugged my shoulders.

After all, those boys are all nothing but entitled, self-absorbed phonies who only want my hand because of the title, power, and fortunes I hold within my name. It truly is a good thing, and I thank Selene every day that my mate isn't one of them, or I would eternally be damned.

"Honestly, why couldn't I just search for my mate myself, just like you did with yours?"

When my brother Aayden turned sixteen, he literally went and travelled each pack in every known land in the world in search for his destined soulmate until he eventually succeeded and found her halfway across the royal kingdom, and she is every bit what my brother and parents expected her to be: the only daughter of a respected noble couple, Alpha and Luna.

"You are a girl. The men are always supposed to be the ones who search for their mate, not the other way around. Let them come to you, sister, not you to them," he replied.

"Well then, why couldn't mother and father actually invite every male wolf from all packs regardless of title and rank? I'm sure my mate would be one of them, and if so, he couldn't possibly search and find me here as I am always locked in these high walls of the castle. I'm almost a bird who's locked in a fancy cage." I sighed again, but this time my brother turned to face me with a stern look on his face.

"You know you are just not any she wolf, sister. You are a Princess, the only princess of all werewolves. The first daughter, princess, to be born into our family for over a century of only nothing but sons, which makes you even more special. You are a special and rare diamond in our family, and a special and rare diamond like yourself deserves nothing but the best of the best. Your mate will not be one of those pathetic, low-ranking wolves from a non-royal or noble pack. Your mate will be a son of a noble lord Alpha and Luna from a respected royal or noble pack where you will rule together as the next Alpha and Luna. End of discussion."

My eyes widened at my brother's little speech, and I only felt nothing but hurt deep inside of me, despite knowing he only wants what is best for me. And I was about to argue back, but the loud and gruff voice of the bellman behind the doors interrupted me.

"Announcing the arrival of Prince Aayden Florian Fenrir, the only son and heir of Alpha King Axel Leonard Fenrir. In his hand is his younger sister and the special star of the day, Princess Aleecia Flora Fenrir." He announced our arrival as the high doors finally opened, revealing the grand ballroom with our parents and the rest of the invited guests already standing inside.

Oh, what fun.
