"remember how i told you the ranch was under construction last year?" eliana cracked her knuckles.
"um, yeah, i guess?" ben cocked his head to the side.
"well, it's finished, and i'm leaving today, and i won't have service for a few days."
"no service? it's not the forties, ellie."
"that's kind of the point. we're not supposed to be able to contact people outside." she bit her lip. "i'm sorry i didn't tell you earlier."
"no," he sighed, "it's fine."
"i'll be gone until next thursday."
"that long?" ben pouted.
"yeah." she nodded. "i'll try to call once or twice, there's a payphone."
he held back a laugh. "a payphone?"
"don't insult the payphone, ben." she raised her eyebrows seriously. "it's your only form of contact with your girlfriend for the next week."
"alright, alright." he laughed. "i won't insult the payphone."
"eliana!" lola called. "peter's gonna yell at us! you're making us late!"
"coming!" she yelled back, then turned to ben. "alright. i'll call you sometime soon."
"i love you." he smiled.
"i love you."
