You Cant Be So Hard On Yourself

After the truesure hunt more people started to trust Varian a little more, but people like Monty, Flespar and Niggle were a different story. Varian however didn't care a whole lot, his mind was on another topic, Catalina. Xsavior was right, Varian did have a crush on the red-headed pigtail girl with freckles decorating her face. Varian was walking through the city when he saw Angry, and whenever you see Angry you know Catalina is right around the corner, before he had time to run they both saw him.
"Hey Varian"Angry waved from across the street
"Hi guys " he waved shyly.
"What are you doing V? "Angry asked.
"Oh Raps asked me to meet her, she has something for me to look at" he responded quietly and nervesly. He never had trouble talking with people, but talking to his crush or just when she was around was a different story.
"You ok? You seem nervous almost, are people still giving you a hard time, we can do something about it" Catalina said smiling at the blue eyed boy. Varian smiled at the thought that Catalina would stand up for him, and also for not thinking of him as a horrible person, unlike the way he thinks of himself. Catalina and Angry understood that mistakes happen and they do not define us and that it's in the past.
"Thank you for your offer but I would have to say no to that. I don't want people hating me even more, or people hating you for standing up for me" he smiled at Catalina who smiled right back blushing.
"Ok, see you later them" Angery said totally not reading the room. Catalina stayed back for a quick second to give some encouragement.
"We don't care what others think, but if you don't want us to, then we won't, but don't be to hard on yourself" Catalina added. As he walked towards the castle a pit started to form in his stomach and as he got closer, it got bigger and bigger.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" The guard said to him. This was neither Stan nor Pete, there for he did not know Varian as a friend.
" Rapunzel wanted to meet, she wanted to talk to me"
"That is Princess Rupunzel to you, only her friends get to call her Rapunzel. Hey? Aren't you the guy who tried to kill her"
"Ummm" he did not know how to respond, all he could do was look at the ground and run his left hand against his right arm. Just then Eugene walked out hearing all the commotion.
"Hey hair stripe, what's happening"
"Sir, this guy tried to brake in" Varian's eyes widened afraid that Eugene might believe the guard, I mean way wouldn't he. He has done so many things to not be trusted. Eugene looked at the shocked Varain and smiled.
"No he didn't, he would have done a must better job at that, and this is Varian, he's a friend." Eugene explained but the guard decided to argue with him.
"I thought Varian was the evil kid who went on a mad rampage who no one likes anymore?" Eugene face palmed. Before anyone else could speak Varian spoke first.
"That is me, and I'm sorry, I'm sorry for hurting people, I'm sorry for taking out my anger on all of Corona, but The Princess did ask me to come here" when Varian talks about those moments you can hear the guilt and pain and it broke Eugene's heart. When ever he apologies he sounds like he is about to brake down, and he wished that people would stop brining the whole situation up, it helps no one. Even though he was on the receiving end of Varian's evil play, deep down he knew Varian was a good kid, and thats why it hurt so much more to fight him.
"Do you want a guard to follow him?" Eugene wanted to kill this guy, he was clearly not understanding what was going on.
"No, Varian is our FRIEND, he's meeting Rapunzel." The two walked in quickly. Neither of them knew how to start a conversation after that. Eugene was about to speak but Varian butted in first.
"Don't apologize, he's just doing his job, making sure the Prinses doesn't get hurt. He's just making sure I won't..." Varian closed his eyes trying to stop the tears from falling. Guilt eating at him everyday, haunting his dreams, his day dreams his memories its like they didn't want Varian to forgot, not like he could even if he tried.
"Varian," Eugene started to say softening his voice "have you talked to anyone, about how you feel? I can tell you have it all bottled up and it comes out whenever someone brings it up. You can talk to me if you want, or Rapunzel, even Lance; ok maybe not Lance, but someone" Eugene got down on his level. His eyes genuine and real, he wanted to help the boy but had no idea how. What happened to his dad was tragic and scary, and how he responded while wrong, was done out of fear. The boy needed help, he needed a friend to talk to.
"I'm just afraid you will hate me, Eugene I see you as a big brother and some of what I feel or felt was anger towards you and I can't have you hating me, not when the rest of the town dose as well." Varian breath out.
"I don't hate you kid, and you being mad at me, weather in the past, present or further is not going to make me hate you. Varian, let's say after Rapunzel tells you whatever she is going to tell you me and you go somewhere private and you can talk about this some more, what do you say" Varian just nodded in agreement. That sounded nice, talking about how he felt, how he wishes he could take the moment back and fix all his mistakes. As Varian and Eugene walked in the throne room they were meet with the Princess, King and Queen.
"VARIAN! Just the person we were looking for" Raps smiled running up to him. Still not use to hugs from Rapunzel it took a moment to hug her back, but he was so glad when he did because it only made her hug him tighter.
"You did ask for me to be here" Varian smiled causing Rapunzel to laugh a little.
"Anyway" the Kings voice boomed over the joy that was in the room.
"Oh right, you know the Demanatis scroll" Raps started to explain.
"I know of it, besides the little slip I gave you, that's really all I know about it, why?"
"We want, or more need you to translate it. No one else can do it, your the smartest person in Corona"
"I really wouldn't say that, I mean your smart, and Eugene... has his gifts"
"Hey!" You could hear Eugene shout as he was standing in the back.
"You can be modest all you want, but you are the only one who can decider this" Raps handed the scroll to Varian, and his eyes lit up. It was like nothing he has ever seen, the language he couldn't understand. He got so excited, figuring things out always put a smile on his face and what he thought a good day was like. Varian was a nerd, no denying it.
"Told you he would be excited" Raps said looking at her parents as they smiled a little at the boy who was already trying to figure out what everything said.
"Varian we are trusting you with this" Raps said looking into his blue eyes while he looked into her green ones. They stared at each other as if having their own conversation. He knew then trusting him with something this important is a sign of beginning to build amends.
"You can trust me"
Rapunzel informed him in everything that he needed to know in deciphering it. All about Demanadence, about the enchacments and about the Dark Kingdom. Rapunzel had a hard time talking about what happened to Cas.
"Rupunzel, I'm so sorry. I know how close you two were" Varain said putting his hand on her shoulder trying to convey that he was here for her.
      A few hours later it was just Varian and Eugene sitting alone outside. Varian had no idea how to start this conversation, lucky for him Eugene knew what triggered it.
"I have no idea how the princes was able to forgive you like that, honestly" he said trying to sound like Flespar. Normally Varian would laugh but not now.
"I never truly wanted to hurt her...to hurt anyone" his voice cracked. He took a deep breath and tried to continue his voice trembling as he was looking at the ground as he talked, he found it easier to spill his emotions. "I was scared, mad at myself, I felt alone. I had no idea what to do... I felt like I couldn't turn to any one. My father was the only person who I had, and then he was gone" Varian's blue eyes glisened as tears stared to from. "and I thought I would never be able to make him proud. No matter what I did I always felt like I was a disappointment, that thats's all I could ever be to him. So when I couldn't get Rapunzel to help me during the storm I felt like I let him down again. I had enough of letting him down, that no matter what letting him free from the amber would make him proud of me, and I went as far as not caring if people got hurt a long the way. The path of hate is something that no one should go down, you lose everything about you, become someone your not." Varian looked up at Eugene tears falling from his eyes and dripping down his cheeks. "All I want is to go back and stop myself from doing any of it, starting from trying to get rid of the black rocks, or maybe it would be better to stop my alckumy. All it has ever done is cause trouble. I can't even go in my lab because it hasn't changed from last time I was there.  I hate leaving the house at times, I feel safe where no one will hurt me, where the only person who could ever love me after all the things I've done is with me. It's really hard liking someone when everyone hates you, I feel like I deserve nothing and-"
"Hold on, you like someone?" Eugene smiled punching the kid on his shoulder.  Varian stopped the tears immediately wiping the tear stains on his face.
"What, I didn't say this, who said that, they are wrong, it's not Catalina, why would you think I like her, it's not like her red hair makes her face light up, especially during sundown, or the freckles that dance on her face" Eugene didn't add anything only gave one idea.
"You said you can't go back in your lab because it looks the same from that night, how about me and you go clean it up?"
"Eugene, you don't have to do that, I can totally do-"
"I know, but I want to help you, I have thought about this situation also, thought how could this have played out differently, and there is only one things that comes to mind. We should have been there for you. That's how we will end this conversation on this depressing topic." The two got up from sitting and both walked out of the castle and towards Old Corona where the whole time they were laughing and Eugene telling the kid story's of the group on the road.
"Eugene, Rapunzel had told me parts but, what's the whole story behind Cas?"
"She betrayed her" Eugene flat out side.
"Ok, but why. No one ever just dose, especially friends like those two." Eugene sighed.
"Cas is first Gothols daughter" Eugene started but Varian interrupted.
"Like Gothol Gothol, stole Raps Gothol, evil Gothol, hella old women Gothol, obsessed with being young Gothol, that Gothol"
"YES! Sorry, so she felt like her own mom choose Rapunzel over Cassandra. She has felt like she was always out shined by her and that they were never friends after all"
"Wow, that's some trauma right there. Who's the next person then?" Varian asked with a serious face.
"What do you mean?" Eugene asked in confusion.
"Raps had two people betray her, me and now Cas, three's the magic number" Varian smiled a little at his joke but it quickly vanished the moment he saw the look on Eugene's face. His brows were pointed down and his eyes a little smaller due to his eye browns frowning. They were like daggers coming out.
"Ok, to soon got it. In all honestly I am sorry for Rapunzel, they were like sisters." Just then they realized they had gotten to Varian's lab. While he was here to free his father from the amber he went in with the answer to his problem, with a reason, now he has no reason and is afraid to start again. They walked in and amber liquid soaked up the floor boards, tables were cut in half, paper everywhere. Pink goo, the chain that kept Queen Ariana captured everything was the exact same. Flashbacks started to arise in his head.
"Oh! So now you care what I want"
"Varian PLEASE!" Rapunzel voice rang thought his head.
"If something happens to me promis me my mom will be safe" "I can't make any promises Princess" he heard the coldness of his voice eco in his head.
"I'm sorry, please forgive me, please princess!" Varian yelled. He fell on the floor hugging himself.
"Varian your not here alone, you got me, Eugene" Eugene heard the door open looking over his shoulder he saw Qurin, he gave him a thumbs up saying that he's got this.
"Varain I am here, you told me you saw me as a big brother, well I see you as a younger brother. And I will do whatever I can to keep you safe and to make sure you are never alone again." Eugene hugged his friend until he calmed down and after the two cleaned up his lab. Varain even showed him how he created flinoulion.
