We Do This Together

The lustrous, golden hue of the rising sun peeking through the branches and lush green leaves lit up my surroundings as I continued forth. It had been several hours since I had left and so far, that tiny spec of regret was starting to blossom.

Here I was, running through the depths of unknown territory to save the life of my childhood best friend with little to no plan what so ever.

"I should've thought more about this before actually doing it," I breathlessly muttered to myself as I slowed down to a stop, "should've brought a bottle of water as well." I hunched over to catch my breath.

Standing up straight, I decided on walking the next few miles. The bright daylight was kissing my face, warming me to the core and blinding me at the same time. My hand reached up, shading my eyes to have a clearer vision of the way ahead of me.

The noise of twigs snapping and dried leaves crunching under the weight of my body echoed throughout the forest, accompanied by the chirping of birds, amongst other wildlife sounds.

My mind did not hold back when presenting with the numerous possibilities of things going South, making up scenarios that turned out to be my worst nightmare. With the negative thoughts swarming my sanity, I did not hold myself back when scolding myself for not thinking of a clear and prosperous plan for my motive. The only plan I had at the moment was to try to get Mila to safety and then what? What would I do then? Wait a minute, how would I get Mila out of that hell hole? How would I find where exactly that bastard has restrained her?

Realising I did not have the answers to any of my questions, I moaned in agitation, "I don't need enemies to fuck me over, I'm enough to do that myself."

My hands crept up to cover my face to provide some sense of escape from my pessimistic thoughts as my steps slowed down, bringing my body to a halt.

Whilst wallowing in my despair, the slightest of smiles graced my cracked lips, thinking about how even if I was here feeling confused, consumed by the negatives, that maybe I would relieve Rafeial of the pain of carrying my burden and try to handle that bastard on my own. Certainly, I will not be willing to give up until satisfied.

Several minutes passed by as I stood in the same manner, cursing myself and I would've continued my episode of despair a little while longer if it wasn't for the abnormality I picked upon.

My arms fell to my sides but my eyes remained shut as I listened in closer and to my surprise, I was not imagining it. The entirety of the forest had been plunged into an eerie silence. No chirping, no noise of the existence of wildlife as before whatsoever, except the sound of my breathing which now seemed exceptionally loud.

I gradually opened my eyes and everything looked the same, not one thing out of place but I didn't let my guard down because one thing I was sure of; something's out here and I am an accessible target.

I didn't think twice before moving underneath a tall tree because after all, nobody thinks twice about the movement in the trees. My hand grabbed the bark and boosted my body up, my legs wrapping around it for some stability.

It did take me quite some time to climb up to a reasonable height and by the end of it, little splinters were poking out from my hands but that was the least of my worries. I made myself as comfortable as I could be whilst being seated on a branch and played the waiting game. Waiting for whatever that made the forest fall silent.

Boredom was starting to cloud my mind as the minutes passed by and I was starting to think that maybe, just maybe, I was being paranoid for no reason. Sighing audibly, I straightened up as I decided to get back down. I need to keep moving forward.
