y/n wailed out and listened to the echo of it as she dropped to her knees.
she couldn't decide what was more painful:
seeing her boyfriend slowly bleed out in front of her,
or watching the life of her young friend fade.
both were full of agony,
and y/n couldn't find the air to breathe.
"no...no!"
she cried,
clinging to gally's chest.
the longing for him trumped the betrayal she felt inside.
gally raised a weak hand and held the nape of her neck,
bringing her ear close to his lips,
"i'm...sorry.."
he wheezed out.
y/n shook her head frantically,
"no! we can't-we can't leave them here!"
she sobbed,
eyes darting between chuck and gally.
y/n took the boys hand into hers and squeezed as hard as she could,
"why, gally, why?"
she whispered and let the tears fall from her chin.
and before she could truly process,
she was being ripped away from him.
thomas dragged her back by her shirt collar,
trying to get her away from the gunfire,
but she couldn't find the sense to.
"no! get off of me! we can't leave them, thomas! let go!"
she writhed out of his grip,
but it was soon replaced with much stronger hands.
y/n was thrown back,
her last image of gally being his lifeless eyes.

i gasped loudly as i sat up in the bed.
my heart was racing outside of my chest,
i could practically hear it echoing throughout the room.
my palms were sweaty,
and it seemed my whole body was thick with perspiration.
i threw my legs over the bed and sighed,
trying to ignore the gnawing pain in my chest.
"bad dream?"
i looked up to see teresa in her own bunk.
"yeah."
"i'm sorry."
i laughed without humor,
"yeah, right."
"i'm not your enemy, y/n."
"yeah, well, you're not my friend either."
i got to my feet and trudged to the bathroom for peace.
i let the cool water splash across my face and soothe my anger,
until i looked into the mirror.
the anger melted into the pain i had been trying so hard to ignore,
and it all came flooding back.

"come on, gally!"
y/n whined as she laid in the grass around her,
gally's head blocking her sunshine.
"i can't, y/n. if the boys notice a hint of favoritism, they'll banish the both of us!"
"so you admit, i'm your favorite?"
"uh, yeah, i do favor you over a bunch of shank-head boys."
she laughed and reached for his hand,
pulling him down.
gally sighed and sat next to her,
returning the heat of the sun to her skin.
"relax, my love, i'll return to work in a few minutes. just...enjoy this moment with me, yeah?"
"what moment?"
she opened her eyes again to meet his,
and a sudden gasp left his lips.
he had never noticed just how beautiful her eyes were.
the sunshine pouring through them reflected the hints of gold,
and made her all the more ethereal.
gally was almost convinced the girl before him was extraterrestrial.
no human could possess such beauty.
"are you listening?"
she questioned with a giggle.
"oh, uh...sorry, go ahead."
"the moment! it's just you and me, the weathers nice, it's rather quiet. no chaos, no worries. just you and me."
gally chuckled and took his hand into hers,
"your eyes are beautiful, y/n. i don't know if i've ever told you."
"my eyes, huh?"
she repeated with a shy smile.
one she always wore when receiving compliments.
"yep. even through the worst of it, your eyes are always bright and deep with love."
"you have nice eyes, too. so full of life."

i didn't notice the tears that were currently falling down my cheeks.
it had barely been two days and i was already succumbing to the grief.
i couldn't get that image out of my head.
gally lying there,
his eyes slowly turning cold when they had once been so warm and inviting.
having to leave him there made my head swim with guilt.
it was never going to end.

"doing okay?"
thomas asked,
taking a seat next to me against the wall.
"i'm alright. how are you, tommy?"
"...yeah, fine. i'm..i'm sorry for having to-"
"no, don't apologize. you did what you had to do. gally was...uncontrollable."
i laid my head to his shoulder,
where he laid his head on top of mine.
two friends,
thick with sorrow.
