surprising moments: minho

i was the first to wake up that morning.
the sun had barely touched the scorch yet,
and i knew it was time to make our travel again.
i looked to my right to see you in the midst of a deep slumber.
i knew the weight of the stress from the past few days was beginning to take its toll on you.
i didn't want to wake you in the slightest,
but i knew our best chance at reaching the city would be met if we left soon.
so i let the gentle brush of my fingers run down your cheek,
which was still smooth somehow.
you stirred awake to meet me with eyes ringing exhaustion,
but also bearing a soft smile.
"you never change,"
you mumbled.
"what do you mean?"
"you've always waken me up the same way. ever since our first day in the glade."
i laughed and nodded,
"yeah, i'm a creature of habit."
you sat up carefully,
and i knew that your muscles were aching with each movement.
bruises covered your skin,
and it was gut wrenching to see.
"you're crazy as hell, you know that?"
"why?"
"you've taken every hit possible for someone. got stabbed by the grievers so thomas didn't, took that stun bullet for me, took a beating as a distraction."
you shrugged and stretched as best your body would allow,
"i'm a creature of habit."
"yeah, you got the creature part right,"
you let out a loud laugh before i continued,
"no more of it. you hear me? only think about yourself from now on."
"ugh, but-"
"i mean it, y/n. you can only handle so much pain. here soon, that little heart of yours is going to quit."
"..okay."
i nodded and planted a quick kiss to your forehead before getting everyone up.
as we began walking,
i held you tight under our sleeve of fabric that shielded us,
and noticed the lessening color in your skin.
"have you eaten?"
you looked up at me and rolled your eyes,
"don't you think there are bigger things to worry about?"
"answer me."
"no, i haven't."
"come on, y/n, you're going to-"
"stop worrying about me, will you?"
you leaned into my embrace before continuing,
"you have other people to worry about too."
"what makes you think i'm not worried about them?"
"because you didn't ask thomas why he hasn't eaten."
"he's a big boy. he can take care of himself."
"you're saying i can't?"
i shook my head with a laugh,
"god, you're stubborn. of course not. just...just eat something!"
i found a granola bar to give to you,
and made sure that you ate it.
the silence then suspended over us,
but it was nice to have a peace of mind for a moment.
i began to imagine you and i someplace else that didn't require fighting to survive;
somewhere peaceful.
"if you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?"
"somewhere cold; i'm tired of the heat."
"somewhere cold. i see."
"why? are you planning for our future?"
you teased,
nudging my shoulder.
i laughed at how unbelievable it was that you could read me so easily.
"i was, actually, then i realized you're too much of a shuck-faced little girl."
"oh!"
you laughed,
"shut it. you'd be lost without me."
"mm, i would."
"so would i."
you turned to give my cheek a tender kiss,
then continued walking forward.
it was then i realized there wasn't a thing i'd do for you, y/n.

the storm came over us quicker and harder than i anticipated.
lighting began striking down everywhere,
and even taking a few of our own.
i noticed the break in the sky,
the rippling electricity fighting through the clouds,
and looked down to see who would be hit next.
and before it could take you as it's victim,
i pushed you out of the way and allowed the bolt to strike me.
i let out a cry of pain before collapsing to my feet,
where the jolts of electricity stripped every moving muscle inside me of its mobility.
the pain became too much,
and only heightened as you pulled on me to get me back to my feet.
but before i passed out,
i could hear your voice very faintly through the ringing in my ears,
screaming out for me.
and that was enough to keep my heart beating.
***
i stirred awake and felt the pain with each movement.
i groaned aloud and tried to move as best my body allowed,
but i didn't get far.
"relax, you don't need to move right now."
i opened my eyes to reveal the godsend you are,
and smiled weakly.
"...hey."
you placed your head to mine gently,
where i then held your hand into mine.
"thank you,"
you whispered,
laying a tender kiss to my temple.
"mm, don't ask me to do it again."
you laughed lightly and shook your head,
"i won't. how do you feel?"
"...like stale klunk."
"i imagine so."
despite the searing pain that rippled through me,
i found enough strength to find your hand.
"you need to eat."
the thought of food suddenly inked into my mind,
sending a gnawing pain into my stomach.
after running on pure adrenaline for hours,
and sleeping for the rest,
i had found little to no time to eat.
"are you going to nurse me back to health?"
i teased,
giving you a grin.
"you never quit, do you?"
"quitting is for the weak."
you giggled in a way that always brightened the darker parts of my day,
then planted a gentle kiss to my cheek.
"unfortunately, we're almost out of food. but, we have some water left."
you adjusted the cap off of the canister and held the cool metal to my lips.
you titled it back just enough for the liquid to fall inside.
it was refreshing to feel the spring water dampen my once dry mouth.
i swallowed it and allowed it to travel through the cracks in my throat,
then finally settle inside of my gut.
i leaned my head against the wall again with a sigh of gratitude.
"thank you."
"it's the least i could do."
"so...where are we?"
"i'm..not sure, honestly,"
you admitted with a wry laugh,
"thomas brought us in here."
i looked to your eyes and noticed the darkness that loomed inside of them.
"you haven't slept,"
i stated.
"was kind of hard to. i thought...i thought i..."
"but you didn't. i'm right here."
you looked back to me with a soft smile,
but your eyes were beginning to pool with tears.
between the exhaustion lingering throughout you,
the lack of sleep,
and festering guilt,
the tears were bound to happen sooner or later.
"don't cry, y/n, please. i hate seeing you sad, and my movements are very limited right now."
"i'm not sad, idiot."
"then what's with the waterworks, my love?"
"i'm just...grateful for you. that's all."
"yeah? well, i'm very grateful for you too."
the night remained still throughout the building,
urging you and i to whispers after being yelled at by frypan for being too loud.
but eventually,
the sleep found itself upon you.
you rested as peacefully as possible in my lap,
where i watched the steady rise and fall of your chest.
with the gratuity flooding my body,
i leaned my head back against the wall,
and slept as best i could with you by my side.
***
the rushing of voices swarmed towards me and forced me awake.
as the view slowly came into vision,
i watched as a man carefully circled thomas.
"who is that?"
i asked through the grogginess in my voice.
i sat up easier than before,
thanks to the rest i had acquired.
"some crank. runs this building apparently."
you answered with your eyes to him.
i nudged you,
"you're staring pretty hard. what, you think he's cute?"
you scoffed and lowered your head with a laugh,
"shut up."
the man stopped his taunting and trailed over to where we sat,
"something funny, hermano?"
i shrugged,
"hop off."
he kicked my leg with the tip of his shoes,
sending a rippling pain throughout my body.
i winced and let out a loud groan,
"what the hell is wrong with you?!"
without an answer,
he kicked my leg again.
i could feel the sweat beginning to build against my neck from the sheer pain.
i forced my eyes open to see him grinning at me,
then to see your fists balling at your side.
"oh, god, y/n-"
i began,
knowing how blinded you could become by your anger.
but before i could finish the sentence,
you tackled him to the ground and straddled his waist.
with a quick punch to his jaw,
you blindsided him long enough to stand up and keep him at his knees.
your knife held steady to his throat.
i was stuck between lustful admiration,
and anger for your irrational acts.
"let him go, y/n!"
thomas yelled aloud.
the crowd of cranks was beginning to surround us.
but you kept him steady and forced his head up to look at me.
"apologize."
he resorted to swearing beneath his breath.
you quickly nudged him between his shoulder blade with your knee,
jerking him forward.
"apologize for kicking him or everyone's going to watch you bleed out."
the man coughed and picked his head up with a twisted grin,
"i apologize."
satisfied,
you swiftly helped him back to his feet,
then took to your seat next to me again as though nothing had happened.
"are you okay?"
i gazed at you then slowly nodded my head,
"yeah, fine."

as we continued our trek throughout the city,
i couldn't stop myself from turning to stare at you.
you and jorge had come to terms with one another,
i could tell even he admired you for your braveness and strength.
and i was left to fight the urges rising within me the longer we walked side by side.
you had proved, yet again, just how far you were willing to go for me.
"are you ever going to stop gawking at me?"
you asked,
interrupting my commending thoughts.
i laughed rather sheepishly,
"i can't lie and say i'm not amazed."
"it's nothing you haven't seen before."
"it is though. the most i've seen you do is punch gally for pushing you out of the way, not hold a grown man at knifepoint with-with hundreds of other cranks around!"
you laughed and covered your face with your hands in embarrassment,
"you would have done the same for me."
"i would."
the look in your eye was nothing short of ardent.
you were beaming radiancy,
and i couldn't hold myself back any longer.
i pulled you around the corner where we'd be shielded from the eyes of everyone else,
and pressed you up against the brick wall.
it was cool to my palms,
but nothing compared to the chills you brought just from your lips.
we kissed vigorously,
and i felt the world around me die out.
all i could focus on was you.
my heart raced inside of my ribcage while your body pressed itself to mine.
you pulled back as though to tell me we needed to catch up,
but your reddened lips were spread into a smile that i knew resembled the same ideas in my flustered mind.
i picked you up and felt your legs wrap around my waist,
where i pressed you back up against the wall.
we indulged in this secret moment of our love.
where no one else existed;
nothing else mattered besides us.
your lips were like heaven in a world so forsaken.
your fingers brushed the nape of my neck before you peeled back,
breathing heavily through the lust in your throat.
"you decide to do this...in a city..full of cranks, huh?"
you teased between breaths.
"i can't help myself."
my lips carefully trailed to your neck where i kissed delicately,
relishing in the sounds of your ragged breathing.
"minho,"
you whispered into the air.
chills filled my body at the sound,
and i couldn't help but pull back to look at you.
you pulled my head closer to yours and pecked my lips.
"god, i love you."
i said,
then noticed the swelling in your bottom lip and couldn't fight the grin.
"i love you, too. now, come on before these cranks take us as their own."
you climbed out from my embrace,
then grabbed my hand and guided us to the group.
we were forced to lie about our detour,
but you couldn't hide the purple lovebite i left against your collarbone.
it was there for us only;
our little secret.
