y/n was leaning against the tree trunk when she first heard it.
being shaded from the sun,
the alarm rang throughout the glade and shocked all those inside.
she got to her feet and found alby, newt, and gally gathered around the box.
"it's a week early,"
y/n stated aloud,
talking to no one in particular.
"oh, really? hadn't noticed that,"
newt snickered,
shoving y/n playfully.
when the box opened to reveal another boy,
y/n found it as no surprise.
having been the only girl sent here in three years,
she grew accustomed to the occasional new boy.
but this one was different.
despite the worry in his eyes,
and his trembling body,
y/n felt a sense of familiarity towards him.
and,
if she was being completely honest,
he was attractive.
before gally could jump in and scare him any more,
y/n took it upon herself to help him out.
she carefully climbed into the box and extended her hand for him,
"come on, greenie. let's go."
the boy grabbed her hand,
and the small contact sent a prickle of nerves up her spine.
she gasped at the feeling,
and the boy must have felt it too.
he ripped his hand away from hers and gaped at her,
mirroring her very own expression.
"we don't have all day! bring the green bean up!"
y/n shook her head of the thoughts and carefully took the boys hand again,
"these shanks are going to try their hardest to intimidate you. remember everyone was just as new and scared as you are. in the end, we're all just a bunch of idiots in a box. come on."
she smiled reassuringly and helped him up.
but as soon as he stepped foot into the grass,
he began running wildly.
y/n sighed and watched,
drowning out the jeers of the boys to replace it with the memory of their touch.
it had been so electrifying,
so foreign,
yet so familiar all at the same time.
she could practically feel the jolt of energy running throughout her while she remembered it.
y/n watched as the boy fell to his feet,
leaving everyone to laugh.
"you're all a bunch of slintheads."
she called out before running to help him,
"you've got to work with me, man. alby's gonna wanna throw you in the slammer now,"
y/n informed while helping back up to his feet,
also trying to fight the surge of nerves that threatened her body by his intense gaze.
"where am i?"
"the glade. now, please don't make this harder on yourself."
***
y/n and thomas had become closer than one would imagine in just a matter of minutes.
y/n's friendship brought out the best in thomas,
and y/n felt as though she was no longer an outsider.
thomas made her feel included,
and made sure to give her the opportunities to voice her opinions.
he was quick to stand up for her when it mattered most,
and they always kept each other close.
they were as thick as thieves.
she was no longer just "the girl" now that thomas was around.
but then,
somehow,
someway,
the two ended up closer than they imagined.
their lips had touched for the first time one evening and the same powerful surge of energy rushed through every waking muscle.
confirming what they knew all along:
they were meant to find each other.
so here they sat on this cool night,
y/n's body curled into his,
watching the glade's partying around them.
"i worry about you, you know?"
y/n suddenly spoke,
feeling his thumb trace small circles to hers.
"why?"
"i mean...you've been here barely a month, and you're already a runner."
"you have nothing to worry about, y/n."
she nodded,
"i know. i figured you'd be in the maze eventually."
"why do you say that?"
she laughed and shook her head,
"remember your first day here? not even five minutes out of the box and you hauled ass."
the two of them shared a laugh like they had normally done,
but it never came short of blissful.
thomas was glad to have a friend and lover all in one,
and he knew he'd never stop fighting to keep her safe.
all that mattered was her happiness,
and thomas did everything imaginable to keep a smile on her face.
he laid a gentle kiss to her temple amidst his loving thoughts,
"can you believe how far we've come?"
"i know."
"just imagine how much further we're gonna go...together."

i love you.

thomas flinched as her words echoed in his mind.
her sweet voice was there,
and he heard the words loud and clear.
"what?"
she questioned,
noticing his change in mood.
"did you say something?"
he asked.
y/n laughed nervously,
"no?"
"you didn't just tell me you loved me?"
it was her turn to flinch.
"the hell? did you, like, read my mind or something?"
"do it again."
she tilted her head in confusion,
then let the words appear in her mind.

i love you.

i love you, too.

she brought her hand to her mouth in surprise,

oh my god! you're scaring me!

i've always been scared of you, nothing new.

ha ha, thomas.

the two burst out into an uncontrollable fit of laughter,
their new ability to communicate being too much to bear.
***
thomas tossed and turned tonight.
screams echoed in his mind,
and they painfully resembled y/n's.
he tried to force his eyes open,
but he couldn't fight the sleep anymore.

thomas!

her voice finally shook him awake,
and he jerked away from his slumber to find her.
"where's y/n?"
he asked newt.
he shrugged,
"dunno. haven't seen her..."
as the words left his lips,
newt realized her absence was odd.
panic made thomas's limbs freeze.
newt and him began running around the glade in search of her,
but they came up empty.

thomas!

y/n! where are you?!

they took me.

why?! when are you coming back.

they said us falling in love wasn't part of the variables. i don't think i'm coming back, thomas.

stop. don't talk like that.

what do i do?

i'm going to get out of here and find you, y/n.
i won't lose you.
i love you.
y/n?
y/n?
come back.

he received no response.
he fell to his knees and stared at the iron walls aimlessly.
"we have to get out of here. i have to find her."
***
it was painful without her.
it felt as though his very own heart had been ripped from his chest.
every waking moment was a reminder of his ache.
the emptiness that swallowed him everyday.
but he persisted,
he knew he was going to find her again.
it was sooner than he expected, though.
as he remained in the comfort of the dorm provided by their saviors,
minho soon came running in beside newt.
excitement was etched into their expressions.
"dude, get up!"
"what?"
thomas questioned,
rising to his feet slowly.
"y/n! she's out there!"
without missing a beat,
he pushed past them and immediately saw her.
she leaned against the wall,
and had the same glow to her skin she always had.
she hadn't changed a bit,
aside from her worried look.
thomas was full of relief.
and as if she could feel his stare,
she turned her head to meet him and immediately gasped.
she ran towards him and wrapped him tight,
their contact making his body throb with bliss.
the elation was nearly too much,
he almost fell to the ground beneath them.
she was back into his arms,
where she had always felt at home.
thomas laid a kiss to the corner of her lips to remind her of his love,
as though she could forget,
not wanting to give everyone an even bigger show.
their reunion had caused enough stares,
and he knew y/n would grow embarrassed if he placed their lips as one.
no matter how bad he wanted to.
their hopes were high and their bodies were coursing with pure joy.
"i love you,"
she whispered.
three words he had longed to hear.
and he was quick to return them.
"what did they do to you?"
"they-they put me into this other glade. full of girls, and one boy. it was..weird. but, totally like our glade."
thomas hugged her tight and never wanted to let go.
feeling her heart beat against his chest was enough to calm every rampant thought in his mind.
nothing can ruin this moment,
he thought.
until his eyes fell onto a mark that seemed branded into her skin.
he pulled the collar from her shirt down to reveal the mark,
"property of wicked. group b, subject a9. to be killed by group a."
the words seemed stuck in his throat,
and his body was overwhelmed with shock.
someone from their own group was supposed to kill her?
it seemed nearly impossible.
"thomas?"
she questioned,
pulling on his own collar to reveal letters of his own,
"property of wicked. group a, subject a2. to be killed by group b."
