y/n didn't understand what was happening around her.
the metal box she was entrapped in shook vigorously,
making eleven year old y/n whimper out in fear.
she couldn't remember anything,
not even her god given name.
a cold, wet nose nudged her arm,
and she was met with a small german shepard that nuzzled up to her.
y/n didn't know where this dog had come from,
but she knew that this was her dog.
"asher,"
she mumbled out,
not sure where the familiarity of the name had appeared from,
but the dog responded with a low whine.
y/n held the puppy in her arms,
and the two comforted each other in this time of peril.
as she sat back and allowed the blackened world around her to swallow her,
she found an odd sense of familiarity in it.
but before she could ponder it any further,
the doors finally opened,
the sunshine leaving y/n temporarily blind.
the silhouettes began to crowd around her.
whispers began,
questions were asked,
jokes were made,
until a body stepped inside of the crate she was in.
"hi, love, i'm harriet. do you know your name?"
y/n shook her head and was on the brink of tears.
but the girl smiled and nodded her head.
"that's okay. it happens. who's this?"
harriet pointed a steady finger to the puppy,
sleeping peacefully in y/n's arms.
"a-asher."
"asher. that's a lovely name. is this how old you are?"
harriet asked,
pointing to the number eleven on y/n's left wrist.
"i think."
"that makes you the youngest we've ever had. that's cool, isn't it? and, the only dog!"
y/n let the tears slip from the corners of her eyes.
"where am i?"
"the glade, honey. your new home. come on, let's get you out."
y/n stepped out with asher sleeping in her arms,
everyone gaping at the little girl who was new to their glade.
nobody know this was the beginning of what was soon to be the end.

"fetch!"
y/n called,
throwing the tree branch far into the deadends for asher to find.
"i still can't believe how big you two have gotten,"
harriet smiled at y/n,
giving her a small nudge.
"tell me about it. i don't feel fourteen."
"yeah. time flies by in here."
asher came hauling back towards the girls.
he placed the stick to y/n's feet and sat patiently,
waiting for their next game.
y/n scratched the dog behind his ear and cooed,
"such a good boy! go get some water, bud. you deserve it."
without missing a beat,
the dog trekked over to where his dog bowl laid and rested.
"we'll have to leave soon. you know, face the grievers and all."
harriet's voice was soothing,
but nothing could stop the panic inside of y/n at the mention of the maze.
she couldn't explain it,
but the needles the grievers harbored along with their eerie darkness of a habitat sent the worst kinds of shivers down her back.
her stomach flipped at the thought of it.
she couldn't seem to muster up enough courage to fight through.
"they put you in here with us for a reason, y/n. i know, somewhere deep in you, that you're a fighter."
"i'm not, harriet. i-i can't."
"...you're going to have to."
y/n looked to the girl and saw the seriousness implanted in the set of her lips.
"i know, i know."
harriet placed a comforting hand to y/n's shoulder.
"it's okay. we'll be alright."
"yeah, i know."
y/n gave harriet her strongest smile before hurrying over to the comfort of the deadends.
asher trotted over and sat next to her,
laying his head in her lap.
y/n giggled despite the churning in her stomach,
and picked up the stuffed animal hanging loosely from the dogs mouth.
sammy, she had named it.
a faint imprint of the last life she lead.
it'd been a gift.
a flash of blonde crossed her mind,
but before she could grasp it and force herself to remember,
it faded.
y/n ran her hands down the back of asher and sighed.
"i'm scared, asher."
the dog let out a low whine and nuzzled himself closer to her in comfort.
"we'll protect each other though. right?"
asher licked the palm of her hand,
his own way of agreeing.

y/n's heart was racing,
threatening to beat just outside of her chest.
the throb of it had deafened her,
and all she could do was fight.
before today,
y/n cringed at the idea of raising her fist.
but she had no other choice,
it was either her life or the grievers.
and somehow,
much by miracle,
they were saved.
though she couldn't hear much of what the armed men were saying,
due to the roaring of the helicopter and her pounding heart,
she knew their glade had made it.
y/n loaded onto the helicopter and felt her adrenaline slow.
all that was left was the shakiness in her legs and the nausea running through her body.
she fell to the ground,
trying to prevent her eyes from closing.
sonya and harriet hovered over her,
their eyes full of tears but smiled happily.
the ringing in her ears intensified the closer she was to blacking out,
but she could make out the movement of their lips saying,
"we made it, y/n. you did it."
