"wake up, shank, or i'm eating your breakfast."
newt opened his sleepy eyes to see y/n hovering over him with that painted smile shining against her lips.
despite the time and the rude awakening,
newt found himself smiling beneath her gaze.
"you wouldn't dare,"
newt spoke through the sleep in his tone,
turning over in his hammock.
"is that a challenge, newtie?"
he playfully swatted at the air where he assumed she stood to shoo her away.
"i hate when you call me that."
"which is precisely why i call you that."
newt laughed then allowed for y/n to pull him out of the bed.
"come on, man! today's gonna be a good day. i can feel it."
"you're mental, you know that right? that you're mental?"
"ha, ha,"
y/n mocked with a playful eye roll.
"get ready, newt. today's the day i find a way out."
before y/n entered the maze,
newt threaded his fingers with y/n's and said,
"be safe, please. i'll go mad without you here."
y/n smiled and kissed his knuckles,
a habit she picked up when finding them bruised from his bouts of anger,
then nodded.
"don't worry, newt. you can't get rid of me that easy."
the two of them laughed softly before y/n broke off and joined the other runners.
as they entered the maze,
minho turned to y/n and asked,
"when are you two going to get together? it's annoying."
"gross, minho,"
y/n scoffed with the shake of her head,
even though her cheeks were burning from the question.
"we're friends. you would know if you had any."
"i have plenty of friends."
"forcing people to tolerate your company doesn't count as friends, minho,"
y/n taunted and nudged him,
returning his grin.
the runners then separated to tackle their own parts of the maze,
which gave y/n time to think on her own.
there was no doubt she loved newt.
she often told him when she was at her most vulnerable,
and he always returned the words,
followed by a loving hug.
but there was something beneath it that expanded deeper than the familial love they felt for every glader.
newt often sought out for y/n's company during the night,
when his thoughts were at their darkest.
after asking what felt like a hundred times,
he would finally climb into her makeshift bed and entangle himself into her.
y/n often joked that they would become so entwined with one another,
that she could hardly see where his body began and where hers ended.
newt would also bring her plates of food when her mental health dipped and her appetite decreased.
he would sit with her in silence and eat with her.
she didn't know how,
but it always worked and she always went to sleep with a full stomach.
newt would kiss her forehead when she found herself lying against his shoulder,
exhausted from the day of work.
there were often times newt protected her from leering eyes of hormonal boys and even from their harsh words.
y/n would sometimes sneak off with him into the deadheads to find some privacy,
away from the peering eyes of the gladers,
though all they ever did was hold hands and laugh their night away.
but that's what friends did?
right?
she shook her head of the confusing thoughts and decided that their relationship needed no explanation,
it worked between her and newt and that's what mattered most.
y/n turned the corner and found the breath loose from her lungs as she stared at the dead griever on the ground.
she inched closer and investigated it further,
then kicked it to see if it was playing dead.
it convulsed,
making y/n back further away in panic from her rash decision,
but it was ultimately dead.
"woah,"
she whispered,
never having seen a dead one before.
"newt's gonna love this,"
she spoke to herself,
laughing at the reality of it all.
y/n made a mental note of every detail necessary then continued her trek throughout the maze,
feeling the excitement of the evening upon her.

y/n entered the glade after a long day of running and headed straight for newt.
she knew better than to tell anyone before she told alby,
but she couldn't hold herself back anymore.
newt was talking to gally when she stumbled next to him,
beaming like a child.
"y/n,"
newt greeted with raised eyebrows.
"sorry, gally, i'll return him in a few,"
y/n said while pulling on newt's arms to bring them to privacy.
gally laughed and yelled out,
"don't go too hard on him!"
"shut up!"
y/n and newt yelled back in unison,
giggling as they hid deep in the deadheads.
"okay, what is it? you're practically bursting at the seams."
"i saw a dead one."
newt titled his head in inquiry.
"dead one what?"
"a griever. a dead griever."
newt's face fell into a look of surprise,
though it was muted by the turning of thoughts in his mind.
"have you told alby?"
"no, slinthead, i just got back in!"
"why'd you tell me first?"
"because,"
y/n groaned,
rolling her eyes for dramatic effect.
"i thought you'd be amazed but you're acting all keeper-ish right now. come on, newt!"
"alright, alright,"
he began with a laugh,
holding his hands in the air in mock surrender.
"it's...interesting."
"exactly! since the beginning, we've never seen a griever during the day, much less a dead one!"
"what do you think it means?"
y/n directed her eyes to the sky above them to think, then looked back to newt.
"things are changing."
"for better or for worse?"
y/n wrapped an arm around newt's waist while he draped an arm around her shoulder,
beginning their walk back to the heart of the glade.
"who knows?"
newt placed a gentle kiss to the top of her head before they regrouped with the gladers.
they went to take a seat for the upcoming dinner,
but were soon interrupted by the blaring alarm that signaled the box.
newt immediately looked to y/n and raised an eyebrow,
saying with his eyes what he couldn't say out loud.
as they began walking towards the box,
newt linked his arm into hers and drew them back away from the crowd.
"if you think things are changing, i need to know you aren't going to get yourself killed."
y/n looked up at him and asked,
"why do you think i'd do that?"
"because you're an adrenaline junkie."
the girl laughed in response,
but newt was still stoic.
"i won't do anything rash, newt. i'll be safe just for you."
she promised with a dashing smile up at him.
he nodded then found himself entranced by her eyes,
sparkling with the shine of the sun above.
there was a multitude of the world in her eyes;
a deep ache from all she'd lost and endured,
a bright glitter of hope for the future,
a sense of seriousness to remind those who dared to undermine her,
but nothing could distract him from the comfort of them,
ringed with nurture and love.
"you're beautiful, you know that?"
y/n smiled at the compliment and gave him a swift kiss on the cheek in gratitude before joining the group around the box.
newt stood behind to allow the redness in his cheeks to settle and the racing in his heart to calm,
then finally he met with his friends around the box.
as they waited,
he joked around with alby and gally,
but often found himself looking up to find y/n.
she was standing beside minho and ben,
throwing her head back in a laugh that emphasized the column of her throat,
the air around them suddenly becoming sweeter with her laugh ringing throughout.
newt couldn't help but smile.
finally,
the box had come up with a single boy inside,
shaking and terrified like the many greenies before him.
newt was suddenly met with nostalgia as he peered down inside.
