different people: gally.

"it amazes me,"
newt's tone of surprise reached across to gally and
y/n who were whispering amongst themselves.
"what does?"
gally asked with his arms crossed,
almost challenging newt.
newt only chuckled and waved a finger between the couple.
"you two."
"how?"
"i just never in a million years would have thought about you two becoming a couple."
y/n snickered and shook her head slowly.
"we're not..that much different."
"only just quite the opposite,"
newt continued with a low snicker.
"i mean, look! y/n's all sweet and kind, hardly raises her fists, so, so intelligent. and gally, well, you're all muscle and no brain."
"yeah, which means i don't have to think to do this."
gally reached across the table and gave newt a playful, but still painful, smack to the face.
"gally!"
y/n gasped with a soft smile to her lips.
"what?"
gally looked as though he had done nothing wrong;
he was clueless to why y/n dramatically gasped.
"you can't just do that."
"why?"
"because it's...rude."
"he deserved it."
y/n rolled her eyes and looked to newt who was rubbing the sore spot against his cheek.
"are you okay?"
"he's fine. you're fine, aren't you, newt?"
"shut up, twat."
the whole table fell into small groups of laughter.
even gally found himself chuckling harder than usual.
his hand found its way to y/n's knee,
where he laid it there to rest innocently.
it was a small act,
but enough to fill both y/n and gally with the tender comfort they sought.
y/n rested her head against his shoulder and listened to the quire peace of the disaster they lived in.
the echoing laughs of the gladers,
the crackling wood of the fire,
the stillness of their preserved land.
the calm before the storm.
***
y/n slept restlessly that night.
she couldn't quit tossing and turning,
mumbling in her sleep,
and pulling the covers away from gally in an attempt to shield herself from the dreams.
gally woke up and shivered,
noticing y/n beside him wrapped in the blankets with sweat covering her skin.
her expression was etched with fear,
and her voice was ragged.
the ire he felt from her kicking had ebbed away,
and become replaced with a certain sympathy.
he wrapped her sweltering body away from the blankets and let the tips of his fingers trail down from her temple to her jaw.
y/n's eyelids fluttered open to reveal tired, bloodshot eyes.
"are you not sleeping well, my love?"
he whispered.
y/n shook her head.
"i don't know why i keep having these-these nightmares."
"about what?"
"the grievers...it feels so real."
gally laid his head into his palm but let his free hand continue to soothe her with gentle caress.
"do you...do you think it's a warning?"
y/n let her tired eyes trail up to his.
"yeah,"
she whispered with a catch to her tone.
gally pressed his lips together and tried to search his mind for some way to comfort her.
but when words failed him,
he picked her up carefully and held her in his arms.
y/n laid to his chest while his tender hand laid to her neck to keep her in place.
"hey, gally?"
"hm?"
"i love you."
gally smiled and pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
"i love you too."
after a while longer of comfortable silence,
gally felt y/n fall limp in his arms.
it didn't matter how different they were during the day.
how different they talked,
how patient they were,
how slow they ate.
when the day ended,
they fell into the bed with the same love pouring from their hearts.

gally woke up the next morning before y/n and slowly slid out from beneath her body.
before he left to begin his workday,
he took a moment to stare down and admire the girl.
she was the most beautiful girl he'd ever known.
gally chuckled to himself before thinking,
well she's the only girl you know.
but he knew,
if they ended up escaping,
there would be no one that could compare to her.
she seemed to be sleeping more peacefully now,
and she sure looked it.
seeing her lie there with glowing skin and frayed hairs made him consider crawling back into bed with her.
but he only let his lips brush her forehead and lay a kiss there before walking outside.
"there you are! where's y/n?"
"she's sleeping in today."
"what? we have no time for slackers!"
newt teased and began making way into the room gally and y/n shared.
gally put a hand to newt's chest to stop him and pushed him back.
"i said she's sleeping in."
"geez, relax, you brute. i prefer y/n's method of persuasion,"
newt mumbled fixing his jacket.
"which is?"
"kind words with a kinder smile."
gally chuckled at newt's impression of y/n and shook his head.
"come on, shank. we've got work to do."
soon after y/n came crawling of the bed,
prepared for the day ahead.
when she stepped out to feel the morning dew against her skin,
something that she'd never felt before,
the chills climbed against her limbs.
she walked over to where gally could be found and smiled upon seeing him.
"hey. you feeling okay?"
"yeah, i'm fine. thank you for letting me sleep in."
"yeah, of course."
gally wrapped an arm around her waist and brought her in close enough for him to lay a kiss to her cheek;
their everyday morning routine.
she stayed a little longer in his arms today than most.
but gally didn't move an inch,
he only held her for as long as she needed.
"i feel like i don't tell you often enough, but i really do love you, gally."
"oh..i-i love you too."
y/n kissed his chin and turned to head to her work.
"i just can't get over it, you two."
gally turned his head to newt and let out a soft chuckle.
"shut up."

when the day came to an end and y/n was sat beside gally for dinner,
he placed his hand on her knee and looked at her with love pooling in his eyes.
"are you okay, love? you've been acting...weird."
"like, bad weird?"
"no, not...not bad. just weird."
y/n laughed and shrugged her shoulders,
lying against his shoulder.
"i don't know gally. somethings changing."
she could feel it in the air.
the way her hairs stood at every waking moment as though the atmosphere was full of electricity.
her body was shaky with each movement,
preparing for a phantom war.
gally could feel it too now that she had pointed it out.
and if he was being honest,
he had been more terrified.
***
the gladers were lined up in a single file line,
watching the doors of the maze stand still.
no movement,
no shield from the grievers that were soon in invade.
the glade had never been so still,
never been so silent.
all they could do was stare into the dark abyss of the maze that seemed to be staring back at them.
fear was clouding their senses.
do they fight?
run?
hide?
what's the correct way to survive this?
gally inched his hand over and felt y/n's hand brush against his own.
he intwined his pinky finger with hers before fully clapping his hand into hers.
y/n stopped shaking once their hands came together.
it was as though the simple touch had filled them with the courage they were lacking.
"it's time, y/n,"
he whispered out just loud enough for her ears to hear.
"i know, love...i know."
gally brought her knuckles to his lips and left a soft kiss there before yelling out instructions to survive the night.
everyone obliged,
much too blinded by their panic not to.
gally didn't let y/n leave his side the whole time.
she had seen this scene unfold so many times through her subconscious.
she could only pray that it ended the way it did in her dreams;
with few casualties and another day alive.
everyone crowded in the homestead and listened to the sounds of the grievers outside,
whirring and clawing around for a victim.
gally held y/n close to his chest and never loosened up.
there was little in this life he had to fight for,
but he would sacrifice everything to keep his love safe.
no matter where they'd come from,
or where they'd end up,
all he needed was y/n.
