twice in one lifetime: thomas.

thomas walked inside the room where she sat,
watching as her body shook with nerves.
she was beautiful to say the least.
even if she was lessening in color and trembling.
"you're y/n?"
thomas asked.
she nodded.
"mhm."
"i'm thomas."
"are you...are you the one putting me in there?"
she extended a shaky finger towards the projector that displayed the glade.
thomas hurried to shut it off in worry of scaring her away;
they needed every willing participant after all.
"i'm thomas. i'm what they call an aid."
"thomas,"
she whispered,
folding her hands into her lap.
thomas felt his blood begin to warm in his veins.
he couldn't quite explain why the breath of his name leaving y/n's lips was so enthralling,
especially in a time so fearful.
"yeah?"
"can you promise me something?"
"y-yeah, anything."
she put her palm out and waited for thomas to put his hand into hers.
when he did,
he could feel just how cold and shaky she was.
he leaned in as she whispered,
"promise you won't let them kill me."
"kill you? y/n, they don't want to-"
"promise me."
the look in her eyes was dark.
thomas had no other choice but to say,
"i promise."
whatever she had seen before thomas stepped in the room had traumatized her.
thomas could see the regret beginning to form in her eyes.
and somehow,
she managed a smile for the sake of thomas.
"thank you."
"no, thank you. you're-you're changing lives, y/n."
"and so are you. you're destined for...great things, thomas."
"you believe so?"
thomas wasn't sure why the sudden need for validation from y/n was so prominent,
but hearing her speak word of praise made his core tighten.
"i know so."
she stood up,
grabbing onto thomas to steady herself,
and placed a cold, but still so tender kiss, to his cheek.
"i'm...i'm ready."
thomas felt the blood swarm his cheeks and darken the pale skin against his face.
he linked his arm with hers and led her to where the box laid.
before she entered though,
thomas had her lay down and relax.
but how could she?
the rest of her life was changing with each passing second.
still,
thomas injected the drug to wipe her memories,
and watched the tear fall from the corner of her eye.
"don't cry,"
he whispered,
wiping away the tear with the back of his index finger.
"it's my mother. i...i'll miss her."
"and she'll miss you."
before her eyes closed,
ending the life as she knew it,
she gave him one last smile and mumbled,
"you too. i'll miss you."
thomas felt his heart sink as she fell limp on the table.
he picked up her now seemingly weightless body and slid her inside of the box very carefully,
trying not to scar her perfect skin.
and now y/n l/n was no longer y/n.
she was a glader,
the one they called firefly,
in honor of the guiding, radiant light that followed her and lit the way for the rest of them.

thomas felt a gnawing ache in his chest as he walked the empty halls of wicked.
there was something painful inside of him.
he searched the rooms in hopes of finding out just what it was that was haunting him,
but ultimately came up empty.
"thomas,"
teresa spoke,
placing a gentle hand on his shoulder to ease him.
"hm?"
"what's the matter?"
could he explain it in words?
not even their telepathy was enough to explain the angst that was swelling inside of him.
"i don't know."
teresa gave him a reassuring half smile then soon turned on her feet,
headed to do research of her own.
thomas headed towards the room that showed him every inch of the glade.
and as soon as his eyes laid on her,
the clawing inside of him ceased to exist.
y/n waltzed around the glade with her straight posture and bright smile that eased the gladers,
no matter their worries.
thomas always admired y/n for her sense of leadership.
she was understanding when necessary,
but never hesitated to become stern when the order was threatening to be shifted.
firefly is the perfect nickname,
thomas thought,
she's so lovely.
was it possible to fall in love with someone he knew everything about only through files?
had her kind eyes and soft hands been enough to make him fall?
thomas didn't know how it worked,
there never was a science to the chemical of love,
but y/n had done it.
she'd gotten him to fall in love with one look.
