Chapter 7/// Late Night Munchies

As soon as I unlocked the door to my apartment I headed straight towards my bedroom. I exchanged my damp set of clothes for some dry ones, tugging on dark jeans, an old t-shirt, and my worn out Doc Martins.

My chocolate colored hair was a frizzy and tangled mess, so I pulled on a black beanie to cover it up. Once I looked decent enough to go out in public, I locked up my house and made my way down those worn out steps again.

On my way to the car, I felt around in my pocket for my phone. I didn't know how long it would take, and what kinds of people were at my destination. I fumbled with it for a second before I got a good grip on the thing and checked the time. It was currently 9 o'clock, giving me about forty five minutes to find this place.

I didn't need to take another look at the note because I already had the address memorized in my brain.

I turned down another road only to discover that I had been going around in a circle for fifteen minutes. A small rest stop sat on the side of the road, so I parked at a pump to ask for directions. I could smell the forbidding scent of candy, snacks, and cigarettes at the entrance.

I quickly grabbed a family sized bag of hot chips and a can of soda with my last few pennies. I knew it wasn't a proper meal for dinner, but oh well.

The elderly salesman slowly scanned each item before I handed him the right amount of money. I asked him for directions to Jefferson Road while he handed me my items.

"Go north towards the big church over there and it'll be the third road on your left. Criminals and thieves crawling all in that area. Please be careful."

I thanked him before heading out into the night, following his directions. I was met with a large warehouse illuminated by one flickering streetlight.

I gulped before making my way down the cobblestone pathway. Shivering, I knocked on the metal, windowless door. I didn't know if I was shivering at what that old man had said or if the cool air was getting to me.

A middle-aged man opened the door and allowed me to enter.

"Uh... Hi. I am here for—" I began.

"The meeting, I already know," he replied in a no nonsense tone. Then, he started walking away from me. He was a few yards away from me when he turned and said, "Are you coming or what?"

I quickly caught up with the guy and followed him into an adjoining room. There were a couple of rusty folding chairs and a scraggy coffee table, but that was about it.

"He'll call you when he's ready," the man announced as he left the room, closing the door behind him.

I looked around the small room, until I heard a door creak open. A girl with bright orange hair walked out of a doorway that I hadn't noticed before. With a smirk on her face, she brushed passed me without another glance.

I was startled by an unseen voice calling my name.

"Ah, Miss Melody Markham— just the gal I was looking for!"
