Chapter 24/// Sealing the Deal

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

I groaned as I reached for my alarm clock. Finding nothing but air in my wake, I scooted my body over a bit more to reach the device.

"What the—OOF!"

I made a sharp intake of breath as I landed on my arm. The IV that was unknowingly embedded into my inner elbow sunk deeper into my flesh, bruising the delicate skin around it even more.

I mentally facepalmed at my stupidity. I wasn't at home, I was at the hospital because of the tranquilizing darts my colleagues shot at me. That beeping noise was my heart monitor, which sounded nothing like an alarm clock to be honest. The doctors must've put me on some pain relievers that were a little too strong for my small stature.

Once I became aware of my surroundings, and my brain woke up, I started to panic. What if I had just ruptured a vein? What if I'm about to die from a misplaced IV? What if they put me in a mental institution for going rogue at the storage facility?

Realization hadn't sunk in yet, so I wasn't that concerned about the amount of people I'd killed at the moment.

A crowd of blue scrubs slid through the doorway, racing to my aide. I was too preoccupied with my thoughts to be embarrassed about a man lifting me up whilst I was half naked under a gown.

He gently placed me on the bed before laying a hand on my shoulder and saying, "Ma'am, we need you to calm down. You're having a mild panic attack, so try to clear your mind and steady your heart beat."

I focused on my breathing to take my mind off of the burning pain in my arm. A female nurse gently removed the IV needle so that she could rub a soothing cream on the wound. I winced at her touch, but quickly composed myself, as I didn't want to appear weak in front of this newly formed audience.

Once the heart monitor increased its intervals between the beeps, the rest of the medics heaved a sigh of relief and exited the room to monitor their other patients. The only one that remained was the guy who picked me up from the floor earlier

"Where exactly am I?" I thought aloud.

"You're in the hospital, which is also part of Erik's facility. Where did you think you were?"

"In an asylum."

The man chuckled at my response, and adjusted my bed so that I wasn't sitting at a 90 degree angle.

"Why were you guys so worried about me?"

"Well," the nurse began, "your heart monitor was beeping like crazy, and we thought you were going into cardiac arrest."

"That still doesn't answer my question. I'm just like any other patient here. I'm not an important figure, and there's nothing special about me..."

"You're important to Erik," he answered. "And I can see why," he muttered under his breath.

Just when I was about to question him about his second statement, Erik waltzed into the room coolly.

"I can take it from here. Thanks, Mark."

Mark stole one more glance at me before bidding his boss goodbye. Erik turned to me with a small smirk.
