2016 | AVENGERS COMPOUND — All currently available Avengers gathered together in their conference room and were informed about the last mission. "So basically, in a nutshell: HYDRA blew up their base and we would all have either almost drowned or exploded to death..." Tony said after he thought that Natasha was talking too much, trying to get her to come to a point.

"And we found a girl." Natasha explained, whereupon she got surprised looks from the other team members. "She is currently in our hospital room and she got hurt pretty bad, the doctors said they're not quite sure, how long it will take for her to wake up."

"FRIDAY, can you show me the girl, please?" Tony asked his AI who was watching over the compound. Shortly afterwards, a live recording of the girl in the hospital room was broadcasted on the big screen TV.

Everyone saw a girl with reddish hair who slept deeply, almost looking very innocent.

"Will she stay with us?" Sam asked, frowning.

"What if she's dangerous?" Bucky asked worried. He knows what these monsters are capable of and wanted to protect his friends. "What if she's still a spy for HYDRA?"

"I could use telepathy to-" Wanda began, but was interrupted by Nat.

"Guys, she's scared!" Said Natasha seriously. "She was with HYDRA for who knows how long and now you want to experiment with her again?"

"Nat is right, everyone deserves a second chance." Clint agreed with her and looked from Natasha to Wanda and Bucky, who were all HYDRA at some point in their past or in Nat's case on the wrong side.

"If I could say something too?" Asked Vision politely and tried to follow the others. "It's all very new to me, but can we really trust her?"

"Cap said he trusts her." Tony said and looked at the rest. After Steve had been under medical treatment for several hours, he now also had to rest in his room. "He said that she saved him. Be honest, would you really think HYDRA would rather stalk us than kill the captain?"

"Thanks." Said a sarcastic voice behind them. Everyone turned around and saw Steve leaning against the door frame and apparently listening the whole time.

"Speaking of stalking," Tony said sarcastically.

"You should rest in your room, Steve!" Natasha grumbled, worried about her exhausted friend.

"I'm fine." He said and stumbled still weak to his team. Sam, who was sitting in an armchair, got up and made some room for his friend so that he could sit down. "I know that it is a risk to let her stay with us, but we can't just leave her alone. Her powers are strong and HYDRA will take her back."

"What powers are we talking about?" Sam asked curiously, raising his eyebrows while the others all widened their eyes when they were told that the girl was am enhanced.

"We suspect hydro-powers, she can breathe underwater and well, she's a good swimmer. She pulled Cap out of the water, she might as well have super strength, possibly. And we believe it's also possible that she can control the water." Tony explained.

"I- I could help her use her powers." Wanda suggested lovingly, as she probably understood how difficult it was with special abilities. She wouldn't mind being her mentor.

"When I found her she was pretty weak and could barely walk." Natasha said, remembering the mission. "The doctors found DNA on her legs that only appears in marine animals or fish. I- I suspect she has or had a tail."

"Sounds like a mermaid." Thor now tried to have a say because he had heard of such beings in legends.

"HAAA! To everyone who thought I was crazy for seeing mermaids: I told you so." Tony grinned bossy. "I'm more than sure now that it was her in the shipwreck. "

"We don't know why, but she can't speak." Nat explained and looked at Steve who was listening attentively to her. "The doctors are unsure, but they can't explain it either."

"At the base, Strucker wanted to attack the both of us, but she somehow managed to throw Strucker against a wall with a kind of scream or sound wave." Steve remembered, while everyone stared at him in confusion or surprise.

It was the first time he had spoken a word loses the mission, he still felt tired because of the medication and exhaustion, but he was very worried about his friends and also about that girl.

"Wait a minute, that was her? Tony and I were already outside and we thought we heard something. I thought my ears were falling off..." Nat said and widened her eyes in amazement and looked at Tony who returned her gaze.

"What I want to say." Steve started and then paused before continuing. "I think we should help her."

"Then you're responsible for her Cap, if anything goes wrong it's your fault." Rhodey joked, who finally said something and pointed to the screen.

"All right, I'll take care of her."
