Y/n's POV
5 Months After Brody's Death
Flagstaff, Arizona
"I spoke to Amy's parents. Funeral services will be held on Sunday in Chicago. They're arriving later today to bring her home. They asked me to let you know that they will be staying downtown at the Mainline Hotel. If any of you would like to visit or pay your respects, they'd like you to feel free to do so," I tell all of the college women sitting in front of me.
"How did you all let this happen?" a girl asked. "You're the FBI, the campus is crawling with police, and she gets murdered waiting for the security shuttle."
"Katie," the residence hall director hissed. "That's not helpful."
"Actually, it is," Spencer countered. "The fact that your friend was killed in such a well-lit area with a police presence indicates that the killer is most likely part of this campus. He's not an outsider. He's someone who wouldn't raise alarm with the police or potential victims."
"You should also be aware that the 3 victims were brunette. At this point, we do consider it an intentional pattern," I say. As the girls dispersed, Spencer and I were supposed to stay behind and talk to Katie and her roommate Aliza, who were the last two to see Amy alive, but for some reason, I couldn't do it. I physically couldn't walk over to them. "I just remembered that I've got a really important phone call to make," I lie to Spencer.
"Phone call? About what?" Spencer questioned.
"It doesn't matter. Look, JJ's outside so you and her can talk to the girls. I just have to do this. Excuse me," I murmur and make my way past him. When I got outside and found a secluded bench to sit on, I pulled out my phone and clicked on the contact I needed to reach. The phone rang for a few seconds, and when no answered, the voicemail greeting started.
"Hey. This is Brody. If you're listening to this message, I'm either out patrolling the streets or spending some time with my beautiful girlfriend, Y/n. Anyways, leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can."
I listened to the voicemail over and over again, and each time I did, it brought more tears to my eyes. Brody's parents had decided to pay his phone bill and keep his phone connected so that anyone could listen to his voicemail whenever they wanted. The phone was buried with him, and was long dead by now, so the voicemail always played. Just as the voicemail would have played again, Spencer approached the bench I was sitting on. I took the phone away from my ear and ended the call before wiping the tears away from my face.
"Hey," Spencer greeted. "Were you just crying?"
"No. Something just got in my eyes," I fib and shove my phone back into my pocket. "What's up?"
"Everyone's back at the police station. We're ready to give the profile," Spencer spoke.
I nodded and stood up. "All right. Lets go." Spencer looked like he wanted to say something, but kept his mouth closed, and instead stayed silent. The short drive to the station was sort of awkward in a way. Usually Spencer and I would talk about whatever, whether it be something that had happened that day or some stupid random facts that Spencer sprouted. But ever since Brody died, our relationship had slowly drifted apart. Finally, we arrived back at the police station where we were ready to give the profile.
"We'd like to give you a rough profile of the man we're all looking for," Hotch started. "This is someone with access. He's managed to move in a small community with a high police presence without raising suspicion."
"Which means there's a good chance that this is someone you've seen," Emily added.
"This unsub has killed 3 women in 4 days," Derek continued. "That's what we call a spree killer. Now, most likely, something has happened in the past few days to set him off."
