Exactly a week had passed and Thomas's birthday had arrived. The day before, Teresa had visited her, according to what they had previously agreed, and they got down to work, determined to bake him a birthday cake. Neither of them were really good at baking but the intention is what counts, right?
The two faced the ingredients as if it were a scientific problem and carefully measured each thing they were going to use, although that precision did not help them much when they wanted to cut the cake to put the filling. Needless to say, if Hayleen had a hard time cutting straight with scissors, there was no chance the cake would get neatly cut in half.
While she supported the knife, pressed lightly, stepped back looking analytically at the cake when she saw that the layer above had been drastically thinned and she tried again, Teresa walked nervously behind her and occasionally covered her eyes so as not to see the mess Lyn was making with the poor cake. The end result was... funny, especially considering Seth's input on the décor, but the most important thing is that they had fun doing it after all.
-It's worth the effort -Hayleen said quickly when she saw that Thomas was holding back his laughter at the state of the cake, after they had sung happy birthday to him.
- I'm sure it is delicious, angel -he reassured her, although he was still trying not to laugh at her-. I see you helped with the decoration, Seth –he said to the baby smiling and hugging him, even though the little devil was more interested in sticking his finger to the cake in front of him.
-¡Seth! She exclaimed, moving her chair away from the table to prevent him from continuing to boycott her already checkered cake.
-I have a portion here for the little prince -Teresa said, placing the plate in front of him as the baby clapped and lunged toward the plate quickly when Lyn brought him back to the table-. Sorry Thomas, it's your birthday, but baby kills birthday boy.
-As long as he's happy... -Thomas replied, watching with amusement and amazement the large amount Seth was putting into his mouth without dropping a single crumb.
The four of them had breakfast together and in the end it turned out that the cake only looked bad because it tasted more than acceptable. After that, they spent some more time together until it was lunchtime and they went to meet the other important members of WICKED.
Having lived with the parents of her soul mates for a month, she was more used to interacting with them. She had a cordial relationship with the minister of WICKED and she was the one Hayleen saw most often, since every free time the woman had, she came to visit her grandson or took him with her for a while. However, the reality was that they were still her enemies and that was always present in the back of her mind when she met them.
The good thing about those encounters was that Seth always ended up being monopolized by Ava, Teresa or Janson, among others, who took care of pampering him and filling him with food until it seemed that the baby was going to explode. It wasn't that she didn't like being with her son, but it was never unwelcome during meals for someone else to watch over him so that she and Thomas could eat in peace, after all they both had him with them every day.
At lunch she ended up sitting between Thomas and Aris, which was a relief, as Thomas struck up conversations with everyone, which often included her, but Aris didn't do it and he was the perfect partner for her to end up enjoying the meal -she wouldn't admit it to herself, because she didn't want to accept her failure to avoid emotional ties with people of WICKED, but she considered Aris the best friend she had ever needed. The boy was that person she could always count on to accompany her without making her feel a burden for wanting to be calmer at times and not get involved in the bustle of unknown people.
