Hayleen had ended up giving in, at Alby's insistence, on letting the Med-jacks look at her. She was sure she was fine but figured it was best to make sure everything was in order considering she was pregnant. However, just as she was about to follow the Med-jack a thunderous noise echoed around the place. Although the Gladers were already used to hearing that sound every night, most could not help looking in the direction of the doors like Lyn.
The fact of seeing how her only possible exit from that place was getting smaller and smaller, and was about to disappear, made her think that she could not risk being left without an exit in a place so dangerous for her. From one second to the next, she decided thats he would try to flee to the doors once more, taking advantage of the fact that everyone had been momentarily distracted.
Determined, she took a step forward, mentally racing and preparing to sprint toward the opening between the walls. However, not a second had passed since her foot hit the ground again, when she already had a human wall in front of her blocking her way.
Gally was looking at her sharply with a frown, daring her to try and discover the consequences. Feeling how the gaze of another of her soul mates burned in the back of her head from the intensity with which he was watching her, she realized that it would only make her situation worse running with them so close to her; she had clearly been wrong in assuming that their soul mates had also become so distracted as to allow Hayleen to try to run away from them once more.
-What was that? -she decided to ask, pretending to be scared and assuming that question was the one everyone should ask after seeing that for the first time.
-That's why you should thank Thomas for stopping you -the leader replied without giving much explanation; as if she was going to thank him for something after what he had done to her-. Now, follow me –he added making a sign with his hand and beginning to explain the rules of the place as they walked.
One of the rules was never to leave these walls and it was definitely one that she was determined not to follow. She might not be able to try to escape the trials at the moment, but when they least expect it, she would sneak her way out of the Glade.
Even though it was already dark, she was still able to glimpse some of the areas she had heard about earlier in the WICKED barracks. Undoubtedly, the presence of a farm in the place was not only visible, but also noted by the combination of smells that were easily perceived in the air.
She followed the supposed leader and the Med-jack in the direction of a wooden building, which she knew they called "Homestead". She could still feel the presence of her soulmates burning behind her but she was determined to ignore them as much as possible; no matter how desperate she was inside for them to stop looking at her, she would not allow herself to show them what was really generating the heat of their gaze.
They were already in front of the door -a horrible faded wooden board- and Alby pushed it open. She was surprised to see fluorescent lights flickering across the ceiling; the place looked so rustic that it was safe to say the Gladers had built it from scratch, though she supposed that, with Gally being the Keeper of the Builders, she shouldn't be surprised that they could do things that required that level of skill.
She followed Jeff as he watched her hawk-eyed up the stairs; clearly the boy was still worried about her unconscious appearance in the box and did not mind ending up hurting himself by looking at her instead of looking where he stepped. The steps ended in a landing. They turned left and she found a railed hallway that led to several rooms. Only one let in light under the door and that's where the two boys guided her.
