The Disease Called Lovesickness

Chapter 1

Renae turned off the vacuum cleaner and took off her headphones. It was impossible to listen to her favorite song when the cleaner kept blaring. She set both down, and placed her palm in front of her, focusing on the dirt scattered over the floor. It took some effort, but the dirt drew in together, as if attracted into place by a magnet.

'Hell yeah!'

The exaltation made her lose focus. The dirt scattered.

'Dammit-'

Her mother yelled from the kitchen, across the house. 'Renaeta, if you mess up-'

'I won't, Mom!'

It took her unnecessary extra time to clean up, and by then her arms felt like rubber. Renae went into the kitchen, where her mother was beating some eggs for cake.

Her mahogany hair was tied loosely down her back, and her almond skin shone with sweat. Her apron was strangely clean over her plain clothes. Somehow, even after two kids- Renae being the older, seventeen year old child- her mother still looked pretty, even if her dark eyes looked tired.

As her mother poured something into another pot, Renae's hands sneaked over the chocolate muffins, still warm. She almost grabbed one when a ladle slapped her arm.

'Ow-'

Her mother's light brown eyes narrowed. 'You already had three.'

Uh oh. How did she find out? Feigning innocence, Renae shook her head. 'No, maybe it was Reyla-'

'Don't blame your sister for what you did!'

Renae crossed her arms. 'Why do you trust her more than me?'

'Because Reyla wasn't told to go the gym to stay fit.'

Renae groaned, mostly thinking about how hard gym workout had been, over the summer. She checked the clock over their dining table, just out of the kitchen.

'Mom, can I go shopping with Kaisa now? I did the cleaning.'

Her mother prepared another batter, not even looking at her. 'Don't spend too much money.'

Giving her mother a quick hug, Renae rushed upstairs to get ready. Their house was mainly pale walls and too much furniture for a cozy space. Her sisters' room, next to hers, was silent.

She stepped into her room to pick out a dress. Her guitar and synthesizer lay side by side, opposite to the bedpost. Renae walked to her desk, which had some papers. Her eyes flitted over them, then she hastily put them away in the drawer.

From her closet she took out a pale minidress and jeans. It was one of those dresses where the sleeves had to be buttoned at the elbows, and after a few minutes of struggling to fix it she gave up. After she was done with her hair and makeup she knocked on her sister's room. No answer. She banged on the door, to no success.

'Hey, why the hell aren't you answering?' she yelled. It was just like her sister to treat her like she was nothing.

An annoyed voice called from below. 'I'm downstairs, dummy. Don't break the door.'

Trying to hide her embarrassment, Renae skipped down the stairs to the living room, where her little sister was lying flat on the couch, watching Hologram Television. She glanced at the screen to make sure her sister wasn't watching anything inappropriate.
