*deep sigh*

So because of 200 followers I read Twilight (thank y'all by the way). Why did this review take so long?

Because I don't exactly know how I feel about Twilight.

Rating: 2/5 stars

Should I read this book?

If you want to write stories, I do think reading  books will be helpful, even if you don't enjoy it.

If you're looking for something to READ as a reader, and you want something fun, then I don't recommend this. This book was actually quite dull, with a bunch of other problems. However, there is no harm in trying and then DNFing if it's not to your taste. This book has a lot of cliches (because actually this book STARTED the cliches)

If you're SUPER bored and have NOTHING to do, then I do recommend you read it.

What Did I like about Twilight?

I know some people HATE Twilight, and I'm not sure why they hate it so passionately because I've actually read worse books (cough the hating game cough) ... but hey, book reviews are subjective.

I did like some aspects of the book. Stephanie Meyers is actually really good with writing horror. The horror parts of the book (it's a vampire book, after all, there gotta be some horror elements) were so well done. I could LITERALLY SEE Bella's nightmare. And that scene where a vampire picked up Bella's scent from a change in wind direction gave me chills.

I would have liked so much more of the fantasy-horror aspects of the book. In fact, I would say Stephanie Meyers should totally try horror writing a bit more. I would definitely read a horror book by her.

What did I not like?

...

Here goes.

This book had a tonne of cliches, because really, this book started the cliches. Twilight was one of the biggest popularizers of YA Love triangles, vampire hotties, vampire-human-werewolf love triangles, bLUe EyEd male romance leads, (also kind of) nOt lIke Other Girls (although Bella did have feminine traits and she didn't bring down other women when she said how she was different from them), possessive male leads, stalker male leads, and a few others I can't name off the top of my head.

Bella did have flaws, and she was aware that her attraction towards Edward (male lead) was weird and unhealthy, which I liked. She did have some agency, but not much. And throughout the book I didn't understand what Bella actually WANTS from life- except maybe hOT vAMpIRE dUDe. What are her fears? It kind of feels like Bella is more observer than protagonist.

Edward was just... okay, he wasn't as creepy as some other male leads. But he didn't have any strong flaws that actually got in his way. He had a more substantial backstory than Bella, but I felt like the characters all lacked depth.

I did not love or even like any of these characters. I felt really indifferent to them. I'm not sure why, but I found them dull. I didn't root for Edward and Bella's romance at all, even though they did have moments which, if I described, would sound 'sweet'.

Some people said Edward is a hundred year old vampire and Bella is sixteen... and alfsjlasjfa it actually didn't bother me much. (I am disgusted by pedophiles, but in Edward's case, he looked and acted like a teenager, so I didn't really find it that disturbing).

What I did find disturbing was that he used to watch Bella all the time (using a mirror he put in her room). Bella seemed kind of flattered that Edward liked her so much to want to watch her all the time...

alskjflasjfsljf.

I just found the book BORING. I wasn't intrigued by the characters, the romance, the plot or the world (even though it was low fantasy, I would have liked more immersion in the world). Reading the book made me sleepy a lot (until the last few chapters though, those chapters were more action packed and horror-driven). I thought of DNFing multiple times.

Overall, I would not really recommend this book. This was a hugely popular YA romance, and since I was writing a YA romance myself, I felt kind of obliged to read it. I just did not enjoy the romance, but I LOVED the horror aspects of the book.
