Most people who have read previous chapters of this book will probably say, NO JUST NO.
And I mostly agree.
HOWEVER, there is one vital factor to consider.
People LOVE reading about bad boys.
Don't believe me?
Wattpad took a poll on their Instagram, asking if people preferred to read about bad boys or good boys.
84% of the votes were for bad boys.
You know what this means? The Bad Boy trope is still hella popular, especially on Wattpad. And if you want to test if it's still popular in the book publishing industry, just search up the top five romance books of the year, and you'll see more than 50% of them will have the Bad Boy Trope. Most won't have it in the title, but the description will make it very clear.
What does this mean for people who want to write Bad boys?
You're in luck. It's your time to shine.
However, I would still recommend adding your own unique twists to the trope (Why, is elaborated later).
What does this mean for writers who like the Good boy/ Softboi trope?
RIP.
BUT THERE IS HOPE.
I know the bad boy Trope is really popular, but it doesn't mean you HAVE to write it. My favorite tip is 'Write what you want to read'. If you don't like reading bad boys, and you write a bad boy story, you're going to hate your story.
And it may be popular now, but the romance genre is becoming slightly better nowadays. I mean, there used to be weird incest tropes and abusive relationships but now it's shifting to healthier dynamics and new tropes. For example, LGBTQ love triangles are becoming more popular.
So I think in 5 years, the Softboi Trope, LGBTQ love triangles and average looking MC tropes will become the most popular. Therefore, if you start writing one of these now, your book will probably be publishing-ready in a few years, and be one of the 'popular tropes' of the time, thus making it attractive to Book Publishers.
I dunno I'm just guessing.
Another thing to consider is the YA stagnancy. I dunno if you know this, but according to Alexa Donne, mid-quarantine, major publishers stopped accepting YA books because the market was 'saturated'. No demand but lots of supply (because lots of writers wrote YA). The same could happen to Bad Boy books.
Bottom line: Write what you want to read, without thinking of market trends. There will always be an audience for most tropes, and there is nothing wrong with writing a generic book.
If you write bad boi/ books, comment on this line (and feel free to link your story and talk about it!)
