Chapter 35

Present time
[No one's POV]

The defibrillator had saved Kirishima's life. It took a few shocks, but his heart was beating again, and he was placed into a coma. His parents had come over, their faces worry-stricken. They weren't told about the full story, and they quite frankly didn't care. They spend every day by his side, stroking his hair and whispering silent prayers for him to wake up.

The class visits often. Lessons were cancelled, for the whole of UA, after the incident - at least, until Kirishima regains consciousness. The teachers were just as traumatised as the students of 2-A who had witnessed the incident first-hand. It took weeks just for them to get over that image of Kirishima on the floor, his eyes wide open and blank. And the fact that he'd almost died.

Kirishima had almost died.

Sero and Ashido stay by his side enough to second Kirishima's parents. They talk to him as if he were there, bringing up past memories and new achievements in their lives and quirks, leaving aside classes being cancelled. Ashido had figured out cool new dance moves, and Sero had almost worked his way through his first 400-page book, which Ashido stated as not being much of an achievement. The conversations were always awkward, with one of the three not once speaking up, but the other two liked to think that Kirishima was secretly listening. They didn't want him to be bored, laying there in a hospital bed as days passed.

There were times Ashido breaks, though, and it was always up to Sero to comfort her.

"Wh-When did our class g-get so t-torn?! Where d-did it all go wrong?!"

Once, Bakugo and Midoriya had visited.

Alone.

They tell Kirishima that they were sorry.

It took a while for Midoriya to make Bakugo think this way. Even if they'd already broken up, Bakugo was blind to the fact that Kirishima was heartbroken too. And maybe, in another universe, he would've gotten together with Kirishima, and help mend it. But Bakugo wasn't so blind as to knowing Kirishima loved someone else - still, it wasn't his position to point it out to the dumbass.

Bakugo says that he's sorry. He's sorry that he couldn't forgive Kirishima and spare him another chance. He's sorry that he kept pushing him away and hurting him. He's sorry he gave up on what they had, and had so easily moved on to someone else.

All of this was genuine, and Bakugo felt bad. Because he'd moved on and was happier with Midoriya, and he could only wish that the same amount of fortune is given to Kirishima.

When he wakes up.

Midoriya spews endless apologies. There was guilt swirling in him and he couldn't help but put the blame on himself. He felt like the tension between the two was already bad enough and him secretly dating Bakugo had only made it worse. He wished that they turned that damn hallway light off - then, maybe, things would be different. Or that he never started dating Bakugo - then, maybe, Bakugo would learn to love Kirishima again.

But no one can change the past. What's done is done.

He then delves down a darker path.

"If I never had these stupid feelings for Kacchan, th-then none o-of this would have h... happened!"

This earned a hard smack to the head from Bakugo, who frowns and says something along the lines of not being able to stop what comes naturally. Midoriya could never not fall in love - heck, he didn't know how long he'd had those feelings for! Bakugo then talks about how, if he were conscious, Kirishima would still approve of what they had. He was heartbroken, sure, and quite mad at their secret relationship, but he knew well enough that the redhead would eventually come around.
