Chapter 17: Trust Me

[f/n] quickly stuffed all of her notebooks and pencils into her school bag, head churning with millions of thoughts. Talking with Kita definitely helped her clear her mind but there was still that uneasy feeling that ate away at her. Waving a quick bye-bye to her friends, she hurried out the classroom. As she changed her shoes at the locker, she saw a familiar mop of dark hair exiting the school building. [e/c] eyes widening, she called out.

"Rin!"
The figure halted briefly and [f/n] swore she saw his shoulders slightly flinch. But then he continued moving forward, walking out of the building. Once again, a wave of discomfort washed over her. Furrowing her eyebrows, she pushed her legs forward into a jog to catch up to him. Clutching her bag, she weaved through the crowd of students, her heart rapidly beating within her chest. She swore that her heart was doing several jumping jacks at this point. Suna was moving away from her at a startling rate causing her to go into a panic. [f/n] was sprinting at this point, arms pumping throughout the air. Gasping, she reached out to grab his bag.

"RINTAROU!"

Panting, she pressed her palms to her knees. "Rin, did you not hear me? I was literally shouting your name so loudly. Gosh, do you-"

As she moved her head up to look at him, she faltered. His molten amber eyes which usually gleamed mischievously at her were staring down at her with such an indifferent light that she felt chilled to her very core. She pressed her hands to her chest, eyes nervously darting around.

"Um, are you alright Rin?" she softly asked.

Suna merely glanced her pretty concerned face and his harsh gaze slightly softened. Running a hand through his hair, he sighed. "I-I don't want to talk to you right now."
[f/n] choked, clearly thrown off by his words. "Is there something wrong? Did I do something to make you mad? Please don't say that. You're hurting me right now."

"You're not the only one hurting right now."
Suna's words sounded heavy, full of fury and misery. His expression was despondent, his gaze borderline cruel. [f/n] for the first time in her life, flinched when they made eye-contact. Holding her shaking hands closer to her chest. she took deep steady breaths.

"I-I'm sorry Rin. I don't know what's happening right now but let's talk it out ok? We can go home and resolve whatever the conflict is. Please Rin," [f/n] begged. Despite his sudden harsh demeanor towards her, Suna was still her best friend. She wouldn't abandon their friendship like that. She wasn't sure what had caused this conflict but she'll be damned if she lets this destroy the relationship between them.

Suna shook her hand off of his arm, ochre eyes dimming. "Did you ever even trust me?"
"What? Of course I trust you. Why would you ask something like that."
"So when were you going to tell me that you're gonna leave to a international university?"

[f/n]'s breath hitched and she felt all of the air being sucked out from her lungs. Her vision blurred and she shook her head, attempting to shake off the anxiety that gnawed away at her every thought.
"Rintarou, I was trying to figure out a way to tell you. I-I do not have an excuse for my actions and I know that I should have been more confident in telling you but I was anxious. I was nervous. I was scared that I was going to ruin our relationship and I didn't know if long distance would be right thing for us. There was so many "what ifs" and I got so scared. This doesn't excuse the fact that I have hurt you but I'm sorry. Rin, I do trust you."

Her voice was shaky throughout her whole apology and [f/n] bit her tongue to hold back the tears that were threatening to spill over. Her eyes burned so much but she was still in school and the last thing she wanted was for everyone to see her breakdown.

Suna's mellow voice broke the silence. "[f/n], you fucking dumbass." His voice cracked slightly at the end and she could see the tears prickling at the corner of his eyes. Stepping forward, he engulfed her body into a tight hug, burying his face into her shoulders. [f/n] could feel the hot tears seep through her jacket and she soothed her hand up and down his back.

"I'm sorry baby. Shhh. I'm sorry." Closing her eyes, she pressed her lips against his head.
She could feel the questioning stares and curious glances around them but in this moment, she could care less. Let the rumors spread, she was done caring so much what others thought about her.
Lifting his head from her shoulder, Suna gave her a small glare, his lips downturned in a pout. "You're so stupid. You should've trusted me more. You know that I love you more than anything so don't think that goddamn Pacific Ocean can break us apart that easily."
[f/n] threw her head back in laughter, chest feeling ten times lighter than before. "Oh gods Rin. You're making it sound like you're going to go fist fight the body of water itself."
"I mean if it wanted a fight then I will gladly go fight it for you."
"Shut up! You're so cheesy, gross." A soft smile on her face, she linked her arm through his. "So, you're no longer mad me at me?"
Rolling his eyes, Suna moved forward. "I could never be mad at you for long."
"Hooray!!! Let's go home now."
"But there's still some things I want to talk about."
"Oh-"
"Don't "oh" me."
"Eheee...well whatever it is you want to talk about, I'll be more than willing to sit down and talk about it."

"So, what are your plans now [f/n]?"
Suna was lying on her bed, head propped up on his elbow to look at [f/n] who was seated at her desk.

"Well, as I told you I'll be pursuing my degree in the US now. I think I'll be staying for four years over there but I'll be coming back to visit for the holidays." [f/n] gave him a doleful smile, hands fidgeting in her lap. "I'm gonna miss you so much."
"Don't get sad now [f/n]. No crying please." Suna tossed a pillow at her face, causing her to loudly laugh. "We can facetime each other and we'll still be keeping in touch so don't get too sad."
[f/n] kicked her legs, pouting at him. "But it's not the same Rin!! Imma miss our cuddles, singing to you, and just being with you," she whined.
Suna merely sighed. Holding out a hand, he beckoned her to come over. [f/n] soundlessly walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. Suna was aware that [f/n] was feeling more conflicted and torn about the situation than he was but he knew that she was too stubborn to give up on her dreams and their relationship. There wasn't much they could do about the situation and Suna was sure that [f/n] was well aware of that too. Soothing a hand on her back, Suna pulled her down to lay next to him. Arms wrapped around her waist, he tucked her securely within his hold. She was warm and comforting, the floral scent of her shampoo calming his senses. He felt her relax, tensed shoulders loosening up.

"You'll be okay."

You'll be ok. Those three words echoed in [f/n]'s head. It brought her a sense of reassurance. As simple and short as they were, she appreciated them. Closing her eyes, she nodded. "Mhm."
The confines of his arms were a safe haven for her. Suna was her sun, her light, the brightest star in her world. As he held her, the heat that emitted from his body was enough to put her at peace. This was what home was to [f/n]. Home was where you felt the most safe, where you felt loved, where you felt the most at ease. Home was Suna.
Her tired voice murmured, "Rin, thanks. For always supporting me. I know that you sometimes think that you burden me but you're not a burden. You're my number one supporter. So thanks."

With that, [f/n]'s eyes drooped shut and she allowed the strong urge to rest overtake her. Her breathing slowed and Suna felt her back rise and fall steadily with each breathe she took.

Suna shook his head, eyes tenderly grazing across [f/n]'s face. Lifting a finger, he gently swept her hair back from her face. Pressing a kiss against her pliant cheek, he whispered, "That's so unfair [f/n]. I should be the one thanking you."
