I awaken to a blazing sun. I feel like a chicken in an oven. Across the street, kids are playing on the neighborhood playground. I'm not like any typical kid. I hate the weekends. I love school. I hate being an orphan and having to participate in game day Saturday. Ugh. It's so boring. I check my watch. 8:23. On schooldays I wake up at 5:00 because I love school. On weekends I try to sleep in as late as possible. I hide in my cot as Ms. Ruth walks by. "Come on M enjoy the sunshine." She says perkily. I peek my right eye out the corner as Ms. Ruth says,"gotcha!" After I get changed into a shimmery blue pair of overalls with a striped blue T-Shirt with my old converse that still fit and I French braid my hair. Ms. Ruth doesn't want us to wear our school clothes on the weekend. I peek in Harper's bedroom and see she's still asleep. I grab a letter on a small nightstand and dart out of her room. I unfold the letter and read it.

My Dearest Harper,
I've missed you for 11 years. I deeply regret leaving you in the wooden cottage that day. You were sent to this orphanage. I know you hate it here and I'm trying to break you out. But I can't. I just got back from your Aunt's last month and I want you to know I can't take you away right now. I wish I could but I can't. Harper I need you to stay strong and wait a few more weeks. If you can, try to escape yourself and meet me at the coffee shop near the courthouse. I will always love you Harper, I always have.
Your friend,
Dad

Wow. Just wow. I thought he could never really love her again. I always thought the parent could never love the child they abandoned. I guess I thought that because...I don't have parents. I wipe the tear from the corner of my eye. As I return the letter, Harper twitches but doesn't open her eyes. I dart into my room but slip on the corner of my cot. "Ow." I mutter. "M. Horseplay will not be tolerated." Ms. Ruth warns. "I understand." I say as I get up. I walk down the hall and see Harper, Amy, Kansas, Jessica and Bree changing into their spring dresses. The girls are separated from the boys and I hate all of them. McCrazy sorry McKenzie follows me to the courtyard. She's right next to my room and insane. Her mother was a model who moved to Paris to expand her career. Her father was a psycho criminal who tazed every stranger he met. McKenzie was banned from moving with her mom so she learned how to be psycho like her dad. I think she did a pretty good job. "Hey McKenzie!" McKenzie says. "My name is not McKenzie." I say. "You don't know that. It's M and M stands for McKenzie! We could be twins!" McKenzie says to me. Oh brother. "Can you please just shut up?!" I ask frustrated. "Um. No." McKenzie says perkily. This is going to be a long Saturday.

When everyone is out on the courtyard, we all make a circle around Ms. Ruth and Ms. Julia. "Hello everyone! Today we are going to play basketball! I'm the team captain and so is Ms. Ruth and we will be picking teams!" Ms. Julia announces. I laugh to that. This isn't kickball Ms. Julia. "Ms. Julia picks first", Ms. Ruth says.
"McKenzie."
"Harper."
"Kansas."
"Joshua."
"Fern."
"Derek."
"Leo."
"Amy."
"Nate."
"Robert."
"And Jessica. The rest of you will sit out this round." Ms. Ruth finishes. Yes! I don't have to play this game even though it's finally something that Preschoolers play. I join Bree and Taylor near the park. Matt, Chris, Brian, Joseph, Walker, Ted and Jon sit at the benches together. Kaitlin, ️Emma, Penny, and Rebecca sit against the school walls. Tommy and Gabby didn't even come outside today. April couldn't find a group so she just sat alone in the field plucking grass. I felt so bad."April. Hey wanna come sit with us?" I ask her. "Yes!" April squeals giving me a huge hug. April doesn't have many friends being the newest one. We sit and wait for the game to begin.

Authors Note: Hey just wanted to say the game is gonna get super interesting! Have an awesome day!:) Like and comment!
