Clueless

Ch. 3

Ms. Julia's team is offense and Ms. Ruth's team is defense. "I almost forget we need a referee! M will you so the honors?" Ms. Julia asks. "I don't really have a choice do I?" I ask. "Nope!" Ms. Julia responds. I get up and move to the bench. I kick out Matt and his group to the park. "Ready set go!" I yell. McKenzie grabs the ball and joggs to the other side and scores. "That's traveling!" Derek yells. "Derek be polite it's the referee's call." Ms. Ruth says. April runs up to help me. "That really was a travel." She whispers. "That didn't count! Traveling on offense!" I yell blowing my whistle. Being ref isn't so bad. I hate McKenzie so much so that felt good. Plus the whistle thing is really fun! "Defense!" I shout. "April you can be my co-ref." I say. Amy runs to the opposing side, but McKenzie steals the ball. "Hey hey! Foul!" I yell. "She didn't do anything wrong!" Fern defends. "Well I'm the ref and I say foul!" April runs up to Fern and whispers,"she is the ref." "April you don't always have to whisper." I say. Garry bursts out of the orphanage out of breath. "Garry Jones!" Ms. Julia scolds. "Your late! Why?" "Um well Shrimp here was chasing me and I had...I...I had to...chase him back." Garry says. "Fredrick! Why would you do that?" Ms. Julia says. They run away back to the school. "Troublemakers." I mutter. Chris chases them, trying to bring them back. Fredrick is super skinny and short so everyone calls him Shrimp. "I also request we replace McKenzie with Taylor." I state. "Of course. McKenzie you're out! Come here Taylor!" Ms. Julia says. "Molasses!" McKenzie teases. "McCrazy!" I yell. I then realize I have to ref 30 more minutes of this. "April you can take over." I say. April puts on the striped ref hat and blows the whistle. The game resumed. Jessica dribbles the ball and April shouts,"double dribble offense!" Jessica tosses the ball to Kansas who passes it to Robert who makes a 3-pointer. "Whoo-whoo!" I cheer. Harper darts the other side with the ball and her ball bounces off the backboard. "Yeah! Go Harper!" I yell. Derek passes to Taylor who shoots but the ball is intercepted by Joshua. "Nice interception!" I shout. Bree rolls her eyes and says,"pick a side M. Your rooting for both teams." Bree was right. I picked Ms. Ruth's team for the rest of the game. Nate finally got the ball but it was stolen by Derek who made a 3-pointer. Fern was just sprinting the whole game. She would be perfect for track. Harper, and Joshua made the most points for Ms. Ruth's team. Derek, Robert, and Taylor made the most points for Ms. Julia's team. "The final score is...33-45! Ms. Ruth's team wins!" Ms. Julia says,"1 game down, 6 to go!" Everyone groaned except for McKenzie who shouted,"yeah!" "That's why everyone calls you McCrazy!" I yell. "Now M mind your manners." Ms. Ruth warns. I read my watch: 11:00. "Lunchtime!!!!" I yell. "I guess it is lunchtime." Ms. Julia says. Everyone walks into their rooms and prepares for lunch. I get a ham and cheese roll with Lays potato chips. "Fakz." I say with a mouthful. "I mean thanks." I restate. After lunch, we all walk to the courtyard again and it starts raining. "Everyone head inside until the rain stops." Ms. Julia announces. Yes! I run inside and find a book in the corner of my closet. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Wow. This place is super old. I open the book and start reading.
