I was happy to be away from Stephen and doing something I liked. I was especially glad to be around people who aren't condescending."L/N! Linda in six is ready to push!" The nurse yells over to me as soon as I walk in. "Doctor Smith isn't available."
"I'm not qualified for this yet!"
"Did you go to medical school?" She asks. I nod. "Are you a doctor? Did you train for this?" She asks. I nod once more. "Then you are qualified, let's go."
I quickly run into the patients room, I wash my hands and put my gloves on, sitting in the chair at the end of my patients bed. "Alright Linda I'm Y/N L/N...ready to meet your baby?" I smile. She nods and closes her eyes. "Sir, I'm gonna need you to help my nurse and hold her leg back." I point to her husband.
"Got it."
I turn on my light on my headset and look down, seeing the baby's head already coming out. "Alright, big push!" She yells out as she starts pushing, I help her guide the baby's head out. She stops and tries to catch her breath. "Linda...one more, we gotta get the shoulders out!" I smile as she starts pushing again, this time the baby comes out, I stand up and place her on Linda's chest. "She's here!" I smile as Linda and her husband start crying. As the nurse cleans up the baby, I help clean Linda up and then wash my hands.
"I've never seen a doctor deliver a baby so fast. Great job kid." The nurse smiles.
I nod and walk over to the baby and listen to her heart and make sure all her vitals were okay. I then wrap her up and put on her little hat as I carry her back to her parents. "Congratulations."
"Thank you so much Doctor." Linda smiles.
"She was ready to meet her loving parents." I smile. "I'll be back to check on you, but if you need anything at all, please let me know."
"Thank you." Her husband shakes my hand.
I walk out and sign a few papers, turning to see Stephen walking over to me. "How was the delivery?"
"Perfect. She was born in less than two minutes. Six pounds, completely healthy. Mother is doing great." I nod.
"That's amazing...I just finished surgery an hour ago."
"Let me guess, they're in perfect condition." I smile.
"Of course they are, I'm the one that saved them." He points to himself.
"Mhm." I smirk and turn back to my papers.
"You did great."
"Thanks...If it keeps going this smoothly today, I might see if I can just stay here. Help the other wards when they need." I nod.
"L/N, patient three is ready for her c-section." The nurse runs back to us. "Baby's vitals are dropping."
"Get her prepped, let's get that baby out."
"I'll assist." Stephen nods.
"Do you even know how to do this?" I ask.
"Sort of." He nods and follows me down the hall.
We get the patient prepped and immediately start.
I make the incision and look up at the monitor to make sure her vitals were okay. "Stephen, once I get the baby out I'm gonna need you to take over for me immediately." I say as I focus on the incision. "Suction here..." after a few more minutes I lift up the baby and cut the cord. "I need oxygen! He's not breathing! Stephen can you please close this incision, I need to do CPR on him."
"Go." He nods.
"Is our baby going to be okay?" The husband asks worriedly.
I focus on the baby as the nurse gives him oxygen, I start to press on his chest, picking him up and patting his back. "He swallowed too much fluid." I pat his back harder. The baby suddenly coughs and the fluid pours out of his mouth as he cries. "There we go...that's it." I smile as I clean him off. Stephen watches me as I carry the baby to his parents and smile again as I hand him over to his father.
Once we were done, he follows me downstairs and into the cafeteria. "You did amazing...I think you found your calling." Stephen nods.
"Thank you." I smile and pay for my food. "I did have some help." I smirk and sit down.
"Tell me about yourself...I feel as if I don't know you."
"Now he wants to get to know me." I shake my head as I take a sip of coffee.
"I do."
"What do you want to know?" I take a bite of my food.
"Where did you grow up?"
"Here in the city." I nod.
"Your parents must be really proud to have a daughter like you. Staying close to home...being a doctor."
"I hope they are." I nod sadly.
I noticed Stephen didn't really react at first. "God I'm sorry." He sighs.
"But you already knew that...didn't you?" I ask.
"Okay maybe I did some research...I just wanted to know who you were."
"That's creepy...really creepy." I smile.
"Your telling me you didn't look up who I was?"
"No. Of course I didn't- okay fine I did." I admit as I giggle.
"Your just as bad as me."
"Definitely not. I don't condescend people." I roll my eyes.
"I can be...difficult."
"Arrogant? Rude?" I tilt my head. "Confusing?"
"At least I don't hide in my office or behind paperwork. I actually talk to people."
"And when you talk to people...you are condescending." I point.
"You really are a child." He sighs and gets up.
"Always runs away." I mutter as he leaves.
