TW: Mentions of self-harm, implied homophobia/transphobia
Wipe the tears and dry your eyes
Behind your smile the truth lies
Sworn to sorrowful secrecy
Ashamed and afraid
The threat of abandonment lurks in your head
It should not be a crime to be who you are
Lies you must tell yourself
Affirmations asserting shame
The words are different
When you speak them silently to the dark
It takes a village to raise a child
Yet you would walk a thousand miles
To appease one single person
Who holds your life in their hands
You don't wish to cut them out
So you find other things to cut instead
As time marches on
The feelings remain
And you begin to realise
It isn't a phase
It is not something you will grow out of
Nor is it something you can change
You are resigned to your fate
And continue to dance the steps you've been taught
Faking it for safety
For they would never touch you,
But their words hurt more than a fist ever could.
