Our OC's are getting bullied by some of the more popular students, and in turn start acting differently or dressing differently in an attempt to stop the bullying. Heck, if the bullying is because of their talent they just stop talking about it even though they're normally very passionate about it. If the bullying is about how they dress, they change their style. If it's about how they act they start to act differently.
Their crushes notice this pretty quickly, and work together to figure out what's wrong. Once they do figure it out, what do they do?
