Chapter 4

The next morning, I wake up and all I can think about is pressing piano keys down with my fingers. I should be playing music to keep mom's memory alive, not in spite of it. And it's early, so maybe I can just feel the piano keys under my fingers and be inspired to play with nobody around. Heading downstairs, I walk outside to the studio, pulling off the old white sheet from the piano, seeing the sheet music she was writing last year before she died and feeling a huge burst of confidence. Finally, I feel like I can play piano.

Okay, even that's a bit much for me. I let my fingers press down on the keys a few times, forcing my muscles to remember how to play piano. After stumbling through the beginning more than once, my brain's muscle memory finally kicks in, remembering how to play the song.

Wake up" It's like something is finally relighting inside me, reminding me of all the reasons I should be happy, not all the reasons I should be grieving a year after my mom passed away.
