"What do you mean?" Flash asked. He would have wondered if he'd heard incorrectly, but he didn't think Peter's ears were capable of such a thing. He'd heard both sides of the phone call, but he didn't really understand what it meant - or maybe he just didn't want to.
"I mean, Mr Stark needs me. But I'm not me at the moment, so you're going to have to take my place."
"I don't understand."
Peter gave a dry laugh, and moved to the drawer Flash had heard him slam shut the day before. He opened it, and pulled out a piece of red fabric. It took Flash a moment to comprehend what his eyes were seeing. "Spider-Man's mask. Why do you have..." But now it was all falling into place. Tony Stark. The secrets. The super strength, the senses, the weird instincts.
Peter walked to his wardrobe and pulled out the rest of the suit. Flash swallowed, realising what this meant. He was in Peter's body. He was in Spider-Man's body. Peter was Spider-Man.
"You're Spider-Man," Flash breathed. This cannot actually be happening.
"No," Peter said. "You're Spider-Man. And right now the Avengers need you."
The awe passed and Flash began to panic. "I can't be Spider-Man. I don't know what to do, I'll mess everything up, what if I die or let the aliens take over- I don't know where to start!"
"You start by putting the costume on," Peter said, and pushed the spandex into his hands.
🕷
Peter finally managed to get Flash out of the window, and then he was connecting to his suit remotely. "Can you hear me?"
"Peter?"
"I'm here. How are you doing?"
"Terrified. I can't do this."
"You have to, or people are going to die." Peter had no way of sugar-coating that. "I'll be guiding you from here. The key is to not panic, trust your senses, and do what I tell you. Do you understand, Flash?"
"Okay. This is just some crazy dream. When I wake up it'll be over. How- how do I swing?"
"You've seen me do it on TV. See the black buttons on your wrists? Point and shoot, then hold on and jump."
"This is insane," Flash said, but Peter heard the familiar thwip of the shooters and the live video feed connected in time for him to see Flash leap off the roof. He screamed all the way down, but then shot another web and flew. "I think... I think muscle memory has kicked in," Flash said with a mixture of terror and exhilaration.
"Good. Try not to think about what you're doing too hard and your instincts should take over. Start heading towards the fight." He sent a route to Karen to display in the mask, then went to check on the news whilst keeping half an eye on Flash's progress and texting Ned to come over ASAP. The Avengers had already taken out the source of the aliens, but there were still thousands of them swarming the city. Hurting people. Peter felt completely helpless and he hated it so much. The sooner he got his body back, the better.
"Oh my god, there are aliens. I'm fighting aliens," Flash's voice came over the speakers, and Peter focused on that screen. Watching through the outward-facing cameras, he saw Flash drop onto an alien accidentally, only to automatically punch it so hard that its head flew off its shoulders. Flash screeched, and Peter panicked.
"You have to pull your punches, Flash," he said quickly. "Yes, even on the aliens. You're in the spotlight now, I have a no-kill policy and I need you to stick to that."
"Got it," Flash said as he backflipped over another alien and webbed it to the floor. "You weren't kidding about these instincts - it's like your body's just taken over." He let out a whoop as he took out three more aliens and dodged an energy blast from their weapons.
