TW: blood, self harm

Stress POV-

"May I have this dance?"

Glancing up from the incantation book I was studying during the Royal ball, my breath catches as I gaze into the most beautiful brown eyes. Eyes that belonged to the Prince of the land.

I nod awkwardly and place my book down, allowing myself to be led to the middle of the floor, the eyes of other guests burn into my back. For once I was grateful for the robe covering my arms and back. Robes of an apprentice that I was required to wear at all times, even at a royal ball while wearing a ball gown.

I tried not to think too hard about what I looked like, knowing the green clashed with my dress violently, as the Prince turns to me and proceeds to bow. I curtsy back, still not use to the court customs but the Prince began the dance, leading my unsure feet.

After a moment of silence between the two of us, only filled with the music and gossiping whispers of the guests, the prince cleared his throat, "you look very..."

He was cut off by a loud bang of the ballroom entrance doors.

Everything went silent.

I stared at the female messenger as her blonde hair flowed behind her back, fluttering as the messenger gasped in breathes. She had just burst into the ballroom during the biggest party of the years, Prince Doc's birthday.

Whispering rose throughout the ballroom as all eyes trained on the messenger as she made her way to the main floor, passing all the regally dressed patrons and stood before the king.

"I greet your majesty," she stated, bowing to the king, before turning and bowing once again to the prince who had walked over to his father without my noticing, an unreadable expression on his face. "Please forgive my interruption, but there has been word of a mysterious portal which emits the magical power of a beast. We fear it may escape and so we must take action now."

The king pondered for a moment before nodding and standing to face the crowd, "We have just received news of a necessary exhibition. We will send one tomorrow." The king turns to face me, and I squirm uncomfortably in my wizard apprentice robes which hung unflattering on my body, "it will be a great chance for the newest member of the court, Stress, to test her skills."

The ringing in my ears sharpens when my name was called. Why would they want me on this hunt? I could barely do basic healing magic... I had been an apprentice under the court magician Scar for only a month.

But biting my tongue to stop myself from shaking, I walked towards the king, where my teacher Scar, and Prince DocM stood. I willed myself to kneel before them, not missing the glint of surprise in Scar's eyes as I tried to relax my tense jaw, "It would be my honour."

If the silence could deepen, it did. Nothing could be heard except the prince clearing his throat, "Father. I request to go with the party as well."

"Very well. You leave at day break."

And that was it. My mind spun as I was ushered from the ballroom into a side room as the king encouraged the guests to continue enjoying themselves. Scar came running after me as the Prince DocM followed behind. The guards sat me down in a side room as Scar started busying himself with going through drawers. I just sat stone faced, until Scar stood up triumphantly, "ah ha!" Scar whipped around to look at me, a purple silk robe clutched in his hand, the silk bunching up under his fingers, "I was going to give this to you for your birthday, but this is a better time."

I reached for it, my hand grazing the soft silk, sending chills up my back.

"It's made of the finest silk and I enchanted it myself with a curse ward. It should hopefully come in handy," Scar continued to prattle on.
