'She looks so beautiful...'
(Y/N) laid with her head in Lev's lap. She'd fallen asleep before she could even have a bite of stew, but she looked warm enough now. She no longer shivered, and some of the color had returned to her face. And she looked peaceful. Content. He stroked her hair lovingly as he watched her sleep.
He wished she'd be this at ease with him when she was awake. She'd always been so guarded, even when they were still together. Hell, he hadn't seen her home until after they broke up, and it wasn't for a lack of trying on his part. But she always had some reason not to. She had plans with Jess, she had to study, she had to work. All reasonable excuses. Ones he couldn't argue with. But he always wondered why she didn't want him at her home.
And then there was her unexplained presence in his home now. Why had she come in shivering and with puffy, red eyes? Why had she come to his home of all places? She seemed insistent on their breakup── much to his dismay── so why show up now?
A deep-set frown slowly formed on his face. He hoped she was okay. But a darker part of him hoped whatever brought her here happened again. It was selfish of him, he knew. She'd likely only come in a desperate situation, and while he wanted the best for her... he wanted her by his side more. But being by his side was best for her. Lev was sure of it.
Quiet snores emitted from the sleeping girl in his arms, drawing his attention away from his thoughts and back to her. He smiled softly.
'So, so beautiful...'
Lev kissed her forehead, hoping the gentle action wouldn't wake her up and cause her to grow angry with him again.
He loved her. And he hoped whatever had caused her to avoid him for so long would be over, so she could go back to loving him again.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1996
Lev awoke to the smell of food, and a lack of warmth on his lap.
He'd fallen asleep on the couch, and had the sore neck to prove it. But apparently (Y/N) had gotten up at some point before him. With a quiet groan, he got up off the couch, and walked slowly into the kitchen. His mom making breakfast for him before school wasn't at all uncommon; she loved to cook, and took every opportunity to do so. But he was quite surprised to see (Y/N) standing at the stove instead of his mother.
She noticed him almost immediately. "I hope it's okay that I made breakfast," she said, turning to him. "I wanted to make it up to you and your mom for crashing here."
Lev smiled softly. Sweet, sweet (Y/N). "You don't have to make it up to us," he assured her. "I─ We love having you."
She didn't seem to notice his slip-up. "I know," she said. "I just... I feel bad."
"You don't have to feel bad," he replied.
She didn't argue, but the frown on her face gave away that she still disagreed.
He shook his head, knowing there would be no convincing her. He hopped up on the counter, next to the stove, and smiled at her. "So what's for breakfast?"
"Scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast with jelly," she answered, stirring around the eggs. She seemed truly at home here, which made sense. When they were together, she came over as often as possible. He missed those days. He wished he could kiss her like he used to, hold her hand, help her make breakfast.
But the last time he'd kissed her hadn't gone very well, so he thought better of it.
"Lyubimyy, what are you doing sitting on my counters? Get down." His mom entered the kitchen, frowning slightly. "You could fall and hurt yourself from there." She snapped her fingers, and gestured for him to get down.
Lev doubted he could possibly hurt himself from up there── it seriously wasn't very high── but when he heard (Y/N) giggle at his mother's antics, he was more willing to listen. He hopped down, and leaned against the same counter, not wanting to stray too far from (Y/N)'s side.
(Y/N) moved over a bit when she heard the toaster make a noise. She placed the now-toasted bread onto each plate. She then scooped up the eggs and bacon onto the dishes.
"Alright, I think that's it," she said, and put each plate on the counter beside Lev and his mom.
"What's all this?" His mother asked.
"I made breakfast," (Y/N) answered. "I wanted to thank you both for letting me stay here."
"Oh, rybka, you know you are welcome here any time."
"I know." She smiled softly. "And I appreciate that. But I wanted to do something. It's really the least I can do."
Lev couldn't help but to smile. Sweet, sweet (Y/N)... She was perfect.
"Well, thank you," his mother said, taking a seat on a stool at the counter. "I bet it will be delicious."
"Not as good as your cooking, though, Mrs. Ivanov," (Y/N) replied.
Lev's mom laughed warmly. "Ah, such a sweetheart."
They ate the prepared breakfast, talking and laughing the whole time. It was more wonderful to Lev than words could describe. (Y/N) seemed truly at ease here, and that was all he really wanted. He wanted her to be happy with him. Forever and always.
And he was certain that this was the beginning of that.
