"You've got to be fucking joking," I muttered under my breath as I read the text message in class.
My mom had been a travel nurse since I was a baby so it wasn't unusual for her to be away for work. She would leave me with my grandma for a few weeks, sometimes a month, but then she would always spend every minute at home with me to make up for lost time.
That was until my grandma died a couple years ago and my mom decided to start leaving me home alone. It wasn't bad at first since she still made effort to come home whenever she got the chance but as I got older she went away for longer each time.
It didn't bother me too much because I always had the holidays to look forward to when I knew she would be home but now I couldn't even look forward to that.
