Wood was placed down by Silas, his small hands shaking. "Let me help you son" his father takes some of the wood from the boys hands placing them down. Silas smiles at his father while the two females chat.
"Of course that old man is spewing nonsense again! Doesn't he get that this is a new century, we are all the same regardless of race" Lauren scoffs. "And to have said that to you and Josiah! You two help the most in this god forsaken village" she stresses her voice growing louder. "And for him to say that to my baby boy!" She cried out and Aaliyah watched as her emotions poured out desperately. "That old man should burn at the stake" she cries out.
"I understand your frustration, but don't let it get to you" Aaliyah places a comforting hand on the women's shoulder "things like this unfortunately happen, and we can't control it"
"But we can!" The mom stressed.
"And how would we?" Aaliyah asks with a tilt of her head. "Surely you aren't thinking of murder". And with that Lauren freezes the shaking coming to an abrupt stop. The only sound was the fire crackling as Silas and her husband stared at her.
"Sweetheart" her husband calls out.
"Zion! If you could" Lauren stumbles on her words "please honey for once, keep out" she remarks leaving her husband stunned. Aaliyah shakes her head in disappointment before standing,
"I'll be right back" she says to Zion and Silas, before leaving the house.
Stepping out of the wooden cabin I let my boots sink into the snow that was layering quickly. Wind howled leaving my skin to become chill, and in the distance the shouts of Colt could still be heard. I would've been lying if I said I didn't think of killing the man myself, which was very hypocritical of me. But I had let it sink in that he wouldn't be the last person to say those things to me. Because it was life for people 'like me'. No matter how hard we would fight for respect and equality we will not be treated remotely the same, as to them.
Them. I walk through the snow and further into town ,Colts shouts becoming more loud as I see people gathered up shouting and cheering. "AND WHAT DO WE DO WITH THEM?!" he screams.
"HANG THEM!" The crowd cheers. It made my stomach twist with sickness, how could people think like this?
"Aaliyah" I am interrupted from my thoughts and turn around. "You shouldn't be listening to this"
"You know you want to listen as well" I tell Josiah and he sighs but we both walk further into the crowd as people kept agreeing with the old hag.
"We! We own this place! When god put us here we were speaking English! We were what's right!" Colt screams and I observe the crowd as a few people whisper to one another as others cheered.
"Is this man crazy?"
"He should have his head chopped off"
"Bullshit"
They all murmur with distaste. "God has gifted us!" Colt grins widely a person coming to his side with a pillow, and on it laid a sharp dagger. "All of us are children of our lord. So here we make a sacrifice, to god" he grabs the dagger. A golden cup placed in front of him, with shaky hands he holds his left hand out and In his right he holds the dagger.
Sweat laced his forehead as he nervously with wide eyes stares down at his hand "everything" he gulps before lowering the sharp side of the dagger on his palm "is for him" he clutches the dagger and swiftly Slices to the left, a trail of blood following after as it spilled effortlessly into the cup. He cried in agony as others cheered him on.
"Sick fuck" Josiah covers his mouth and I look back towards the old man who was now being bandaged.
"And now" he laughs out with a wheeze clutching his left hand "a live sacrifice! Anyone will work!" He manically laughs.
People discuss within one another, before I spot a blonde girl smile, she shoots her hand up. "I would love to!" She says "anything for my lord"
"Well then come right up pretty" Colt licks his dry lips and the girl walks people making a path, I follow slowly behind and Josiah does the same as we make our way more towards the front. Finally the girl steps onto the stage and she turns to the crowd, she looked around seventeen to sixteen. Far to young to throw her life away to a lie.
"I'm not letting her die" I whisper to Josiah and he gives me a crazy look.
"And how are you going to stop her?" He asks lowly and I give him a worried look before turning to Colt, I shoot my hand up.
