Today is the day of the Choosing Ceremony. Two years ago I fled my father by choosing Dauntless. It was basically an escape route from him. Sometimes that's why I feel like I don't exactly belong in Dauntless. While escaping my father I broke Dauntless' biggest value, bravery.

I stand up and walk into my bathroom, pulling off my clothes. I then take a quick shower. I then jump out and put on my typical Dauntless outfit. I walk into the cafeteria and see Lauren sitting at the table. I sit next to her, grabbing a muffin. Today the muffin flavor is blueberry. In Abnegation they would never have blueberry flavored muffins, or muffins in general. Abnegation eats very simple food, much different from the food here at Dauntless.

"Are you sure you want the transfers? The Dauntless born are always easier and I feel bad making you train the transfers again. I made you do it last year, too." she says.

"Yeah, I'm positive. Anyway, I actually enjoy training the transfers. It's fun to scare the crap out of a bunch of sixteen-year-olds. The Dauntless born don't get scared to easily." I answer truthfully.

"Okay then, Four."

We finish breakfast and then head down to the net. The net in which all the initiates will jump into to enter Dauntless. From down here it looks just like a trampoline, but from the top, where the initiates jump, it looks like a suicide mission. From the top you can't even tell there is a net at the bottom. All you can see is a huge hole filled with pure darkness. That's what makes it so terrifying- in their mind it's a death trap.

Lauren and I wait in silence for either Max or Eric to start talking to the initiates.

I wonder what kind of people will be joining Dauntless this year.

Finally, after what seems like forever, I hear Max start to give his 'famous' speech he gives every year.

"Listen up, my name is Max! I am the leader of your new faction." he starts. Technically it isn't even their faction yet. They sill have to prove themselves worthy. "Several stories below you guys is the members' entrance to our compound. If you can't muster the courage to jump off, you don't belong here. Our new initiates have the privilege of going first."

That's because the Dauntless-born already know that there is a net and that they wont die unless, for some weird reason, the new is removed. For a bit longer the initiates ramble to each other about probably the fact that they have to jump off of a random ledge, or about who will go first.

A few seconds later someone finally jumps. The person is just a grey blur falling down into the net. A grey blur! That must mean someone else from Abnegation finally decided to come to Dauntless. I was, until now, the first transfer ever to join Dauntless from Abnegation.

Were they abused like me? Why else would someone choose to transfer here from Abnegation? Is it also an escape route?

The sides of the net tense up and cradle whoever just fell in. They the person laughs. The person, a girl , laughs! A girl? The fact that they were from Abnegation was surprising enough, but even more surprisingly they are a girl.

I put my hand out as she starts to roll off of the net so she wont hit the floor. She then gets up and stands in front of me. I grip her arm but release it as soon as I'm sure she has gained enough balance to stand on her own.

She is very small, very petite. Her blond hair was obviously tied into a bun, but is starting to fall out.

" Thank you." she says, her bright, blue eyes finding mine.

"Can't believe it. A Stiff, the first to jump? Unheard of." Lauren says mockingly. Stiff is the nickname given to the Abnegation members. Apparently just because you are from Abnegation automatically means you are weak and worthless. Yeah, right.

"There's a reason she left them, Lauren." I say, defending the new girl. "What's your name?"

"Ummmmm..."

"Think about it, you don't get to pick again."

"Tris." she says, finally. She clearly changed it considering I don't remember anyone named Tris. Plus it isn't an Abnegation name.

" Tris. Make the announcement, Four." says Lauren as if she needs to remind me.

"First jumper- Tris." I say, looking over my shoulder and directing the message to the crowd of other Dauntless members. They all start screaming.

I set my hand on the girl, Tris', back and say, " Welcome to Dauntless."

Three words that mark the beginning of her new life.
